And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. Pray like this:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name.
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever.
Amen.
—Matthew 6:7-13

PRAY LIKE THIS

THE PURPOSE OF PRAYER

Your Father knows what you need before you ask him… —Matthew 6:8

  • The primary purpose of prayer is to get God to do what we think God ought to do.
  • The primary purpose of prayer is to be into the kind of human beings God created us to be.
  • Asking for our needs or desires to be met is only a small part of a healthy prayer life.

When we pray…

Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect. —Matthew 5:48

The Lord’s Prayer

Pray the Lord’s Prayer three times in the day. —Didache 8:3 (AD 50-100)

Whatever else we say when we pray, if we pray as we should, we are only saying what is already contained in the Lord’s Prayer. —St. Augustine of Hippo, 354-430

Amen.

OUR…

WE ARE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER.

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses… —Hebrews 12.1

…FATHER…

WE BELONG TO A GOOD AND LOVING FATHER.

A FATHER IS A…

…IN HEAVEN

OUR FATHER IS HEAVENLY: PURE & WITHOUT FAULT.

The Prayer Rx

Pray the Lord’s Prayer at least 3x’s a day. Pray additionally as needed. Pray it alone. Pray it as a family. Pray it before you eat. Pray it before bed. Pray it when you feel sad, when you’re tempted, or when you’re hurting. Pray it when you’re happy. Pray it when you’re lonely or afraid. Pray this prayer often and mix it with faith in our Heavenly Father who loves and cares for you.

Amen.
