Isaiah 53
1) Isaiah 53:4a “Surely our griefs He Himself bore, and our sorrows He carried;”
“griefs”–kholee, H2483. (Always sickness or disease)
a) The word “griefs” is the Hebrew word kholee, which means “sicknesses.” Deut 7:15 says “And the LORD will remove from you all sickness (kholee)…” Deut 28:61; 1 Kings 17:17; 2 Kings 1:2, 8:8; 2 Chron 16:12, 21:15.
“bore”–nasa, H5375
b) Concerning nasa, this verb refers to suffering punishment for something. “And if a soul sin … then he shall bear(nasa) his iniquity.”(Lev.5) “And he was numbered with the transgressor, and he bore(nasa) the sin of many… .” (v.12) If he bore our sins (v12) vicariously, He must also have bore our sicknesses(v.4) in the same way. The same verb nasa is used for both.
“sorrows”–makob, H4341
c) The word “sorrows” is the Hebrew word for Mental Anguish or Physical Pain. The word is translated “pain” in Job 14:22, 33:19 and Jer 51:8, and other places.
“carried”–sabal, H5445
d) Concerning sabal or “carried”, this also means to bear something as a penalty or chastisement. Lam. 5:7 says, “Our fathers sinned, and are no more; It is we who have borne (sabal) their iniquities.” Christ also carried our sins. Isa 53:11, “As a result of the anguish of His soul, He will see it and be satisfied; By His knowledge the Righteous One, My Servant, will justify the many, As He will bear (sabal) their iniquities.” As Christ bore our iniquities, he also bore our pains, Is 53:4
*Therefore the literal translation is:
“Surely our sicknesses He Himself suffered punishment for, and our pain He bore as chastisement.”
Young’s Literal Translation reads:
“Surely our sicknesses he hath borne, and our pains he hath carried them.”
*It is said that the Holy Spirit’s own interpretation of Isaiah 53:4 is in Matthew 8:16,17:
“And when evening had come, they brought to Him many who were demon-possessed; and He cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were ill, in order that what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, saying, “HE HIMSELF TOOK OUR INFIRMITIES, AND CARRIED AWAY OUR DISEASES.”“
2) Isaiah 53:5 “But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, And by His scourging we are healed.”
“scourging”–chabbuwrah, H2250
a) “Scourging” or more literally to “bruise”. Entire wounding or bruising of Christ’s body, stripes on his back, the buffeting, the plucking our of his beard, the nails in his hands and feet, the crown of thorns and the spear thrust in his side; All of these bodily sufferings that we may have healing freely.
b) Peter quotes this verse saying, “He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed.”(1 Pet. 2:24) That no one would think it refers to spiritual healing, the word “healed” is the Greek iaomai, “a verb that always speaks of physical healing in the New Testament, and always in connection with healing of physical ailments”.
