And forgive us our sins, as we have forgiven those who sin against us. —Matthew 6:12 NLT

‘And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.’ —Matthew 6:12 NAS

Sins = opheílēma (debts)
the result of having a debt, focusing on the after-effect of the obligation.

-What do you think that means?

-Are we bargaining with God or is God making a deal with us? I will if you will?

-Does the bible teach that God’s forgiveness is conditional based upon our behavior?

-What does the bible say about how we are forgiven? (what verses come to mind)

God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. —Ephesians 2:8

But now God has shown us a way to be made right with him without keeping the requirements of the law, as was promised in the writings of Moses and the prophets long ago. We are made right with God by placing our faith in Jesus Christ. And this is true for everyone who believes, no matter who we are. For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. Yet God, in his grace, freely makes us right in his sight. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins. For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin. People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed his life, shedding his blood. This sacrifice shows that God was being fair when he held back and did not punish those who sinned in times past, for he was looking ahead and including them in what he would do in this present time. God did this to demonstrate his righteousness, for he himself is fair and just, and he makes sinners right in his sight when they believe in Jesus. —Romans 3:21-26

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive our sins. —1 John 1:9

Sins: hamartano
to miss the mark, fall short

“If you forgive those who sin against you, your heavenly Father will forgive you. But if you refuse to forgive others, your Father will not forgive your sins.” —Matthew 6:14-15

Sin = paraptóma (trespass)
a false step, a falling away, lapse, slip, false step

-If our forgiveness from God is not dependent on our behavior (not of your works) but on grace through faith, then what does this passage mean?

-If I lie about you in public to make myself look good and you look bad, have I committed a transgression or sin against you?

-When you see me, how do you feel?

-When you think about me, how do you feel?

-Are you able to be happy if I am happy and have not suffered any consequences of my wrong behavior?

-Are you irritated every time you think about it?

-If I never say I’m sorry, how could you ever be free from these feelings, emotions, negative thoughts and irritations? (discuss)

-What does forgiving you do for me? (discuss)

For you will be treated as you treat others. The standard you use in judging is the standard by which you will be judged. —Matthew 7:2
