1 John : Chapter 1 - Message Study Questions
Message Summary
Christianity asserts that Jesus was fully God and fully human. If he was fully and only God, he could not die and be the sacrifice for our sins. If he was fully and only a man, he would not be able to bear the weight of all our sins. He would not have the power to conquer death. Therefore, First John teaches that the incarnation of Christ is essential to our faith. God is light and illuminates the dark corners of our lives and offers cleansing, forgiveness of sins, and further illumination. But we still have a propensity to conceal our sins. We rationalize to ourselves, hide from God and others. In order to walk in this Gospel Light, we must understand and believe the truth about Jesus and his work for us. And we must boldly and bravely expose and confess our sins to God. Are you ready and willing to do that today? If so, you will have more light in your life, so you won’t have to stumble around in the dark.
How do we know that events of history actually happened?
Why do you think it is hard for us to admit we are wrong?
Consider This
Read 1 John 1:1-2:2 and answer the following questions.
Who does “we” refer to? If John wrote this book himself, why does he say “we”?
Why was it important that John had heard, seen, and touched Christ himself?
What does the Word of Life refer to? What does this name tell us about Christ?
John saw these things and what did he do with this knowledge (verse 2)? Is there any lesson there for us as to what we should do with the knowledge we have of God?
What does he mean by the phrase “so that you too may have fellowship with us?”
In what way do the things that John wrote give joy to us (verse 4)?
What are some of the results from walking in the light (verse 7)?
What does Jeremiah 17:9 tell you about your heart? What is the solution?
What is the result of confessing your sins (verse 9)? Do you ever have trouble believing you are forgiven?
Moving Forward – Application
Can you memorize 1 John 1:9 this week and use that truth against any thought that you are not or cannot be forgiven?
“So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ” (Romans 10:17 NAS). What can you do to increase your faith in God and the reliability of the Bible this week?
How could you strengthen your fellowship with God and other believers this week?
What blocks your fellowship with God and one another? What do you have to do to restore those relationships?
Prayer is talking to God. Could you step up your prayer life this week by confessing your mistakes, bad attitude and selfishness, at least daily this week? And then apply the truth of 1 John 1:9 so that truth can transform your mind and emotions?
