Two Temples

Devoted followers of Christ have the indwelling Spirit that fully connects them to Christ and to the church.

I Corinthians 6:12–20 (NIV)
“I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but I will not be mastered by anything. You say, “Food for the stomach and the stomach for food, and God will destroy them both.” The body, however, is not meant for sexual immorality but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. By his power God raised the Lord from the dead, and he will raise us also. Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself? Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute? Never! Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? For it is said, “The two will become one flesh.” But whoever is united with the Lord is one with him in spirit. Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body. Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore, honor God with your bodies.

God now dwells not in temples made by human hands, but in temples constructed by

own hands.

The Spirit is within us to keep us set apart and living a holy life.

The Spirit is within us to remind us of the price that was paid for our

.

As a disciple of Christ, we must live with an

of the indwelling Spirit of God.

In the , God come to us in bodily form through a woman.

In the ascension, God incarnate leaves us, opening the arrival of God the Spirit to dwell us and us.

The Spirit Dwells in Two Temples:

I. You are a temple of the Spirit

I Corinthians 3:16-23 (NIV)
Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst? If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy that person; for God’s temple is sacred, and you together are that temple. Do not deceive yourselves. If any of you think you are wise by the standards of this age, you should become “fools” so that you may become wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God’s sight. As it is written: “He catches the wise in their craftiness”; and again, “The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are futile.” So then, no more boasting about human leaders! All things are yours, whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or the present or the future—all are yours, and you are of Christ, and Christ is of God.

The Spirit is within us to keep us from carnal wisdom and to set us apart for Heavenly wisdom.

The carnal wisdom at Corinth was manifest in its sectarianism.

The Spirit is within us to

and free us from man-made divisions.

II. We are a temple of the Spirit

Ephesians 2:19-22 (NIV)
Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his household, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.

Matthew 18:20 (NIV)
For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.

Acts 1:8 (NKJV)
But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.

Acts 2:1-4 (NKJV)
When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”

Those in the church must come out from the

Those in the church must come into the

of the Spirit among the people of God in the house of God.

I Timothy 3:15b (NIV)
God’s household, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth.
