“So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall!” —I Corinthians 10:12

“Don’t be so naive and self-confident. You’re not exempt. You could fall flat on your face as easily as anyone else. Forget about self-confidence; it’s useless. Cultivate God-confidence.” —I Corinthians 10:12

Three weaknesses in David’s character.

  • Lust

“And he shall not acquire many wives for himself, lest his heart turn away,” —Deuteronomy 17:17

  • Complacency

  • Indulgence

“Brokenness is often the road to breakthrough!” —Tony Evans

“Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin! For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment. Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me. Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being, and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart. Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones that you have broken rejoice. Hide your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit.” —Psalm 51:1-12

Why was David’s sin such a big deal?

The results of David’s sin:

  • He brought dysfunction into his family.

  • Lives were destroyed.

  • David’s character and his reputation were tarnished

  • He was overwhelmed with guilt and shame

  • He broke fellowship with God

“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit.” —Psalm 51:10-12

How can I make things right with God?

  • Brokenness

  • Confession

“For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me. Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight,” —Psalm 51:3-4

“He who conceals his sins does not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy.” —Proverbs 28:13

  • Repentance

How does God respond to our brokenness?

“The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.” —Psalm 51:17

  • We are forgiven

“For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.” —Jeremiah 31:34

  • We are pardoned

“The Lord is compassionate and merciful, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love. He will not constantly accuse us, nor remain angry forever. He does not punish us for all our sins; he does not deal harshly with us, as we deserve. For his unfailing love toward those who fear him is as great as the height of the heavens above the earth. He has removed our sins as far from us as the east is from the west.” —Psalm 103:8-12

  • We are restored

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!” —2 Corinthians 5:17
