Tip: The text boxes on the right are there for you to take your own notes as we go.

1. Listen to the Message

John 1:1-5, 14, 17

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 He was in the beginning with God.
3 All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.
4 In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men.
5 The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
14 And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.
17 For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ.

LOGOS means word, speech, thought or principle; the expression of a thought.

The Word has always pre-existed.

John 1:1, Genesis 1:1, Hebrews 1:1-3

God is the Author of creation; Jesus is the Agent of creation and the Holy Spirit is the Attender of creation.

More scriptures on Jesus’ pre-existence: John 8:58; John 17:5; Colossians 1:17

The Word currently exists.

John 1:1: In the Greek, the word was is used in a way that literally means “was and is“.
John 1:14: “the Word became flesh and dwelt among us…”

John wrote his gospel so that all may know Him
30 Therefore many other signs Jesus also performed in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name. —John 20:30-31

2. Discuss in a Life Group

1. For those who claim that Jesus was a created being, how can we use John 1:1 and Genesis 1:1 to argue against that false teaching?

2. Why is it important to believe that Jesus was pre-existant?

3. Discuss the meaning of dwelt (tabernacled). How would the 1st centruy hearers have understood this term? How do we understand it?

4. Discuss other Scriptures describing Jesus’ role in our lives currently.

5. Read Revelation 19:11-16. How does the passage affect you personally? Does the passage encourage you to witness?

6. Have you placed your trust in Jesus as Savior? Please do so today!

Admit and confess that you are a sinner: Romans 3:23, Romans 3:10, Romans 5:12.
Trust Jesus’s sacrifice alone to cover your sins. Romans 6:23, Romans 5:8, Romans 10:9-10.
