Prepare the Way!
Isaiah 40:1-5
- “In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord;”
- How?
- Align
- “…make straight in the desert a highway for our God.”
- Lift
- “Every valley shall be lifted up,…”
- Lower
- “…and every valley and hill be made low;”
- Level
- “the uneven ground shall become level and the rough places a plain.”
- Align
“And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”
SOCIAL MEDIA CHECK IN
“Let’s carefully consider how we reengage with media” —–Pastor Kevin
Most websites and social media platforms are driven by algorithms and artificial intelligence to keep people engaged online.
Be aware of hidden motivators in social media including:
- Financial gain (online engagement is worth billions)
- The desire to gain influence through self-promotion (influence without accountability is dangerous)
Be aware of common online manipulation tactics:
- ‘Hot button’ topics are used to generated fear and outrage which keep people consuming media content.
- Rapid ‘floods’ of information can be used to overload a person’s ability to think clearly about a topic.
- The attempt to build toxic trust through the exploitation of common beliefs.
- Creating a false sense of authority or integrity to gain the compliance of others that is above questioning.
What can we do to create healthy boundaries?
- Limit the amount of time we spend on media.
- Before you hit the ‘share’ button, consider:
- Does sharing this further the purposes of the Kingdom of God?
- Do I know that this is actually true?
- Stay grounded, do not allow internet sources or social media to overshadow God’s Word and the voice of the Holy Spirit in community with the church.
We encourage you to consider elements of a “fasted lifestyle” as you reengage with media.
