DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

Inside the ‘big’ story of David and Goliath, there’s a much BIGGER story between David and Eliab. Eliab cared more about being right, David cared more about making a difference.

As David’s older brother, Eliab was in a perfect position to guide, nuture, and support his younger brother. It appears he did none of those things.

It’s easy for us to look at Eliab and shame him but as Pastor Chris points out, we all have a lot of Eliab in us.

  1. Who has been an Eliab in your life?
  2. Where have you been an Eliab in someone else’s life?
  3. What are the warning signs of being an Eliab?

Pastor Chris walks through how David answered Eliab’s negative talk by side-stepping personal issues and focusing on what mattered.
4. When is the last time you DIDN’T take something personally when a diagreement happened?
5. How can we turn towards making it right rather than being right?

Thinking about making it right, pride and jealousy are huge stumbling blocks.
6. Where is your pride turning you away from making it right?
7. Where is your jealousy causing you to stumble?

MOVING FORWARD

If we get critized by someone who doesn’t know us, it’s easy to brush off. They don’t know us, they aren’t doing life with us. But man, when it’s someone we know, someone we trust - when they criticize us? It can break our spirits so fast! Think of the influence your parents, your older siblings, your cousins, your teachers, your trusted adults have had in your life. You know the good ones, you know the bad ones. Healthy boundaries need to be put in place for the not-good, and gratitude for the good.

  1. Where are you being led to make it right?

CHANGING YOUR MIND

Social media can be one of the greatest sources of joy - seeing a distant relative, sharing an inside joke from years ago, staying connected. It can also be, maybe even more usually be, a source of dissension and stress. Try this week to focus on the joy and calm that can come from being a part of a gloabl community. Walk in the bigger story of turning away from attacks and turning towards God.

HOW CAN I PRAY FOR YOU THIS WEEK?

Pray for the work that God is doing in our hearts to make it right. Pray for the Word to be opened up to us and for the love of God to be with us this week.
