Rooted - Week 7
Wednesday Night – Fill-In Notes 10.13.21
Scripture: Romans 3:21-31
“But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it— the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. Then what becomes of our boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? By a law of works? No, but by the law of faith. For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law. Or is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentiles also? Yes, of Gentiles also, since God is one—who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith. Do we then overthrow the law by this faith? By no means! On the contrary, we uphold the law.”
Big Thought (Summary): God required a perfect sacrifice to satisfy His wrath for our sin. So, God (the Father) sent Jesus to take the punishment reserved for us. Now, when we accept Christ by grace through faith, we receive the righteousness of God through Christ’s work on the cross.
Good Question:
• Is God’s plan different than before? (v. 21)
• Who did Jesus die for? (v. 22)
• Who is responsible for Christ’s death? (v. 25)
• Were people saved in a different way in the OT? (v. 25)
• Who do we boast in? (v. 27)
• What is justification and why does it matter? (v. 28)
• So, what? Now what am I supposed to do? (30-31)
Main Point 1: God’s plan for salvation is not
Main Point 2: Christ died for
Quote: “All of humankind has been enslaved to sin by virtue of our moral debt. The Law of God demands payment in order for us to be considered “righteous” or”just”, but we are hopelessly unable to pay enough out of our own goodness. We need a redeemer. We need someone to pay our debt for us. And according to the gospel, we have such a redeemer in Jesus Christ who paid it in full.” (Swindoll)
Justification: God judicially declares a person to be righteous in his sight.
Main Point 3: Christ was sent to take the
Main Point 4: We are declared righteous before God only by
- John 3:16
- 1 John 3:16
Main Point 5: God is in perfect
Quote: “Salvation is a free gift for us but it is not about us.” (Swindoll)
Main Point 6: We glorify
SGQ’s (MS):
• Main Point #2 says, “Christ died for all who would believe in Him.” Does this mean that everyone in the world goes to Heaven when they die? What does it mean?
• Read the Big Thought (Summary) for this week outloud. Why was Jesus the only acceptable sacrifice for our sins? Why could we not be that sacrifice?
• What comes to mind when you hear that “God is in perfect control?” (Main Point #6)
• Why do we need to remind ourselves about what Jesus did for us on the cross, every day?
SGQ’s (HS):
• Read 1 Corinthians 10:31. What does it mean to do, “…all things for the glory of God?” What does this look like? How do we know we are doing something for His glory, alone?
• What comes to mind when you hear that “God is in perfect control?” (Main Point #6) Do you have any initial hesitation when saying this? Why?
• Read Romans 3:24. Why do we continually attempt to “earn God’s favor” if we know that this verse is true? What is the root (heart) issue going on when we attempt to earn God’s favor? How do we correct this with Scripture (truth)?
