Holy Spirit Is… Week 3

“Can you lose the Holy Spirit”
Once the Holy Spirit enters a person, can He ever leave them? There are 2 opinions.

David Prays for the Holy Spirit to Remain.
*[Psa 51:11 ESV]* 11 Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me.

The Holy Spirit left Samson. **
**[Jdg 16:20 ESV]
20 And she said, “The Philistines are upon you, Samson!” And he awoke from his sleep and said, “I will go out as at other times and shake myself free.” But he did not know that the LORD had left him.
The Spirit left Samson without his knowledge.

[Jdg 16:20, 28-30 ESV] 20 And she said, “The Philistines are upon you, Samson!” And he awoke from his sleep and said, “I will go out as at other times and shake myself free.” But he did not know that the LORD had left him. … 28 Then Samson called to the LORD and said, “O Lord GOD, please remember me and please strengthen me only this once, O God, that I may be avenged on the Philistines for my two eyes.” 29 And Samson grasped the two middle pillars on which the house rested, and he leaned his weight against them, his right hand on the one and his left hand on the other. 30 And Samson said, “Let me die with the Philistines.” Then he bowed with all his strength, and the house fell upon the lords and upon all the people who were in it. So the dead whom he killed at his death were more than those whom he had killed during his life.

The Spirit of the Lord left Saul.
[1Sa 16:14 ESV] 14 Now the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and a harmful spirit from the LORD tormented him.
What exactly does the losing the Holy Spirit mean?

There is the view that during the Old Testament period the Holy Spirit did not indwell believers on a permanent basis. However, some believe that the Holy Spirit being lost was not limited to the Old Testament.

[Heb 6:4-6 ESV] 4 For it is impossible, in the case of those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, and have shared in the Holy Spirit, 5 and have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come, 6 and then have fallen away, to restore them again to repentance, since they are crucifying once again the Son of God to their own harm and holding him up to contempt.

In the Old Testament, the Spirit is never said to “indwell” anyon; rather, He “came upon” people for a time to accomplish specific purposes.

[1Co 3:16 ESV] 16 Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?
[1Co 6:19-20 ESV] 19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, 20 for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.

[Jhn 14:16-17 ESV] 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, 17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.

[Eph 1:13-14 ESV] 13 In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.

While the Holy Spirit will never leave us, we can the spirit when we sin.
[Eph 4:30-32 ESV] 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. 32 Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.

[1Th 5:19 ESV] 19 Do not quench the Spirit.

If we do those things, the Hooly Spirit will not leave nor will we lose salvation, but they are things we ought to avoid doing as much as possible.
[Rom 8:14-15 ESV] 14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!”
[Rom 8:38-39 ESV] 38 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
[2Co 1:21-22 ESV] 21 And it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, 22 and who has also put his seal on us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.
Can a Christian lose his salvation?
Can he sin?

[Mat 7:21-23 ESV] 21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ 23 And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’

[1Jo 2:19 ESV] 19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us. But they went out, that it might become plain that they all are not of us.
[Jhn 14:23 ESV] 23 Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.
