Who is Jesus? - LEAD IN
Philip Yancey The Jesus I Never Knew
“No one who meets Jesus ever stays the same.”
Hebrews 1:1-4
Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son. [This Son] God appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.
“That’s Why We Call Him Savior and Lord.”
Father God appointed Jesus His Son to inherit everything that is His.
Father God reminds us that the Son co-labored in the creation of the universe.
Father God Made His Son to reflect perfectly His glory and honor.
Father God made His Son to reflect perfectly who He was in nature and in character.
Father God reminds us that it is His Son that has made and fully sustains the universe simply by His power.
Father God reminds us that His Son was man’s sin bearer and the only provision for his sin and subsequent - death.
Father God reminds us that only after He accomplished His salvific work on the cross, that He was exalted to the right hand of God His Father.
Father God reminds us that His Son is much more superior to the angels He created.
Without the way, there is no going; without the truth, there is no knowing; without life, there is no living. Without Christ, there is no real hope in this life and the next.
Takeaway: God manifested His love towards us that when we were still steeped in our sin, Christ died for us.
Are you hungry for Jesus and His provision?
Sometimes God lets you hit rock bottom so that you will discover He is the Rock at the bottom.
I have learned over the years that Jesus can be just a NAME. Or a GAME or He can be our AIM but, this I am confident of - one touch by Him - will never leave us the SAME.
You are going to meet Him either as JUDGE OR SAVIOR, but I promise you, you will meet Jesus Christ. You have a date with Jesus Christ. Jesus is the unavoidable, inescapable person in your life.
Discussion Questions
- Discuss the statement, “The Jesus Christ worshiped among many Evangelicals is unfortunately not particularly - the Jesus of the Bible. He, so often, if we are honest, is a Jesus of our own making and fanciful imagination.”
- Based on Hebrews 1:1-4, how is God the Father speaking through His Son in this age and what is He saying?
- Why is being “born again of the Spirit, the greatest miracle of all? Share your testimony?
- What does it mean when it says that Jesus is a “man of sorrows and well acquainted with grief?
- What does it mean to be “hungry for Jesus.” (Hint: John 6:60-68)
- Discuss what it means for Jesus to be a “Lamb” and what it means for Him to be a “Judge.” What is the difference?
