Loving God

Opening Question: What is the earliest crush you can remember? What was their name? What about them drew you to them?

Key Verses: Deuteronomy 6:5; John 15:5; 1 Corinthians 13:4-8; Colossians 2:13-14

  1. Read Deuteronomy 6:5 – What does it mean to love the Lord with all your heart, soul, and strength? Why is this placed as the “greatest commandment?”

  2. Read John 15:5 – What is the relationship between vines and branches? Why is understanding this relationship critical to believers? How does one know that they are tapped into the vine?

  3. Read 1 Corinthians 13:4-8
    a. Describe a time when you found yourself loving even during suffering. What sustained you? How were you able to continue loving?

b. Each of us, at some time in our lives, has behaved rudely to those we love. How do you typically respond to the realization that you have been rude? Is there any rude behavior you know of that still needs to be reconciled? What will you do about it?

c. We know from 1 John 4:8 that “God is love.” This then is how we know that Love “bears all things,” “endures all things,” “Never Fails,” etc. But we are not God. So, what does being in a relationship with the One who is Love do for us? What are the implications?

Application:
• As a Life Group, what does it look like for you to love one another? How can you love one another as a group better? What sacrifices may need to be made to do this?

• Loving as God loved is not just in the context of your group. So what is a way that your group can love the community around you, together, sometime in the next month?
