When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip, “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?” He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do. John 6:5-6
Philip answered him, “It would take more than half a year’s wages to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!” John 6:7
1. What have I decided is
Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up, “Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?” John 6:8
2. What have I decided is
Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down (about five thousand men were there). Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish. John 6:10-11
When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.” So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten. John 6:12-13 (Cf. 2 Kings 4:42-44)
• Big Idea: Jesus uses the
After the people saw the sign Jesus performed, they began to say, “Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world.” Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself. John 6:14-15 (Cf. Deuteronomy 18:14-19)
• Huge Question:
REFLECTION & DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
- Read the Gospel of John chapter 9. What do you like – or find interesting– about this story? Does anything make you smile?
- This man’s understanding of Jesus grows like this: I heard his name. I think he’s a prophet. I think God sent him. I believe and worship him. How did your understanding of Jesus grow?
- Describe a moment of spiritual clarity or insight you have had, perhaps when you became a Christian or some other moment. What new idea or fresh insight did you gain?
- How have you been able to reframe something bad in your own past as something God has used for good?
- How is this man’s response in verse 25 a great example for us?
- Jesus condemned those who “claimed to see” and yet were blind. Why is it difficult to stay humble and open to continual learning and growth, instead of assuming you have all the answers?
