God’s Will
Pray like this: Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy. 10 May your Kingdom come soon. May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. —Matthew 6:9-10
He was despised and rejected— a man of sorrows, acquainted with deepest grief. —Isaiah 53:3a
Big Idea: My response to potential suffering is more important than my protection from it.
Big Question: How should I respond to potential suffering?
Main Scripture: Matthew 26:36-46
Then Jesus went with them to the olive grove called Gethsemane, and he said, “Sit here while I go over there to pray.” 37 He took Peter and Zebedee’s two sons, James and John, and he became anguished and distressed. 38 He told them, “My soul is crushed with grief to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.” 39a He went on a little farther and bowed with his face to the ground, praying, “My Father! If it is possible, let this cup of suffering be taken away from me.” —Matthew 26:36-39a
“Abba, Father,” he cried out, “everything is possible for you. Please take this cup of suffering away from me. —Mark 14:36
How should I respond to potential suffering?
1. I need to seek God
What parts of my heart and life have I been unwilling to seek You with?
“Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.” —Matthew 26:39b
It strikes me that Jesus’ prayer in Matthew 26 is a mirror image of The Lord’s prayer: ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. —Tyler Staton

Then he came to the disciples and said, “Go ahead and sleep. Have your rest. But look—the time has come. The Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46 Up, let’s be going. Look, my betrayer is here!” —Matthew 26:45-46
Then an angel from heaven appeared and strengthened him. —Luke 22:43
