Peter: A Case Study

Peter is

to be a of Jesus.

“And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him.” —Luke 5:11 (ESV)

Being chosen was an incredible

.

“There were a few exceptional rabbis who were famous for seeking out their own students. If a student wanted to study with a rabbi he would ask if he might “follow” the rabbi. The rabbi would consider the students potential to become like him and whether he would make the commitment necessary. It is likely most students were turned away. Some of course were invited to “follow me”. This indicated the rabbi believed the potential talmid had the ability and commitment to become like him.” —Ray Vander Laan

Was Peter the right choice?

  1. He was a . His occupation was already chosen.
  2. He was (Acts 4:13)
  3. He was

    b. Walked on water before He understood how that was possible
    c. Declared Jesus to be the Son of God, but denied his authority to lay down His own life. “Get behind me, Satan!” (Matthew 16:23)
    d. Wants to build 3 tents to Moses, Elijah & Jesus on the mountain where Jesus was transfigured (Mattew 17:4)
    e. Ask for a full body cleansing (John 13:9)
    f. Struck Malchus with a sword, cutting off his ear (John 18:10)
  4. He was a bit (Mark 9:34)
  5. He was (John 13:37)
