Jamie mentioned in his sermon the importance of transferring leadership in the church. He used 2 Timothy to give some idea’s about how Paul passed spiritual leadership to Timothy. Read 2 Timothy 1:1-2. Paul sensed his ministry was ending. There are several reasons he felt it was time to pass the baton. What are a few things you learned from Jamie throughout his time at Central? What do you hope to learn and look forward to as Jon as the Lead Pastor? Discuss.

Paul was in prison in Rome, limiting his effectiveness. Read 2 Timothy 2:9. His influence was declining. Read 2 Timothy 1:15 and 4:16. He knew death was near. Read 2 Timothy 4:6-8. Paul is worn down. Read 2 Timothy 3:10-11. We see Paul had strong faith in Jesus. And we see him ready to release the baton into Timothy’s care. How did Paul know Timothy was ready to receive the baton? What characteristics do you see in Timothy that would show he’s ready?

Read Philippians 2:20 and 2 Timothy 1:5. Timothy had a tender heart and genuine faith. Why would this be important in preaching the Gospel of Jesus? Discuss. What does a tender heart and genuine faith look like?

Timothy had strong spiritual gifts. Read 2 Timothy 1:6. Timothy had courage. What does courage look like? Jamie said the Gospel isn’t church attendance, buildings or programs Read 2 Timothy 1:7, 13-14, 8-9. Guard the truth, guard the Gospel. The Gospel, the good news about Jesus is the power that saves us. Jamie said it is not something we discovered because we’re so smart. The Gospel has been given to us from above. When you think about the good news of Jesus, where did you hear it from? What feelings do you have when you think of the good news of Jesus? Explain.

Read 2 Timothy 1:10. Technology is all around us today. In what way do you spread the good news of Jesus? How could you share this with others via social media or mail? Discuss.

Jamie said the Gospel is so valuable because it promises forgiveness from sins, hope for the future, even after death, and meaning for every day. Paul encouraged Timothy to guard the Gospel because the truth of the cross always brings opposition. How have you guarded the Gospel? If you haven’t had to yet, what attacks have you seen on God? Discuss. Then read Romans 11:22. Paul warns us from attacks from inside the church too. Read Acts 20:28-31.

Read John 16:33. Make sure it’s the Gospel you’re defending and not opinions. Harmony matters. Purity matters. Doctrine matters. Pray for the leaders of Central Christian Church. Pray that church members support, submit to and encourage their spiritual leaders. Close by reading Hebrews 13:17, 2 Timothy 1:13-14. Encourage one another and guard the Gospel!
