Sermon Title: King for a Day
Text: Luke 19:28-44, Luke 23: 13-25
*Luke 19:28-34 (NASB95) *
28 After He had said these things, He was going on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. 29 When He approached Bethphage and Bethany, near the mount that is called Olivet, He sent two of the disciples, 30 saying, “Go into the village ahead of [you;] there, as you enter, you will find a colt tied on which no one yet has ever sat; untie it and bring it [here.] 31 “If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ you shall say, ‘The Lord has need of it.’” 32 So those who were sent went away and found it just as He had told them. 33 As they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, “Why are you untying the colt?” 34 They said, “The Lord has need of it.”
Zechariah 9:9 NASB95
9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout [in triumph,] O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; He is just and endowed with salvation, Humble, and mounted on a donkey, even on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
1) Every moment of Holy Week was
from the beginning of time.
Luke 19:35-40 (NASB95)
35 They brought it to Jesus, and they threw their coats on the colt and put Jesus [on it.] 36 As He was going, they were spreading their coats on the road. 37 As soon as He was approaching, near the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the miracles which they had seen, 38 shouting: “BLESSED IS THE KING WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD; Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” 39 Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, rebuke Your disciples.” 40 But Jesus answered, “I tell you, if these become silent, the stones will cry out!”
Psalms 118:26 (NASB95)
26 Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the LORD; We have blessed you from the house of the LORD.
Luke 2:14 NASB95
14 “Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace among men with whom He is pleased.”
John 12:13 (NASB95)
13 took the branches of the palm trees and went out to meet Him, and [began] to shout, “Hosanna! BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD, even the King of Israel.”
2) This is a season for
.
Luke 19:41-44 (NASB95)
41 When He approached [Jerusalem,] He saw the city and wept over it, 42 saying, “If you had known in this day, even you, the things which make for peace! But now they have been hidden from your eyes. 43 “For the days will come upon you when your enemies will throw up a barricade against you, and surround you and hem you in on every side, 44 and they will level you to the ground and your children within you, and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not recognize the time of your visitation.”
3)
to the will of God,
for humanity, and great
is what lead Jesus to the cross.
Luke 23:13-16 (NASB95)
13 Pilate summoned the chief priests and the rulers and the people, 14 and said to them, “You brought this man to me as one who incites the people to rebellion, and behold, having examined Him before you, I have found no guilt in this man regarding the charges which you make against Him. 15 “No, nor has Herod, for he sent Him back to us; and behold, nothing deserving death has been done by Him. 16 “Therefore I will punish Him and release Him.”
Luke 23:17-21 (NASB95)
17 [Now he was obliged to release to them at the feast one prisoner.] 18 But they cried out all together, saying, “Away with this man, and release for us Barabbas!” 19 (He was one who had been thrown into prison for an insurrection made in the city, and for murder.) 20 Pilate, wanting to release Jesus, addressed them again, 21 but they kept on calling out, saying, “Crucify, crucify Him!”
Three tragedies
1) The group that was shouting Hosanna a week before were now shouting crucify Him.
2) Barabbas was exactly what they were accusing Jesus of
3) Barabbas means son of the father but rejected the actual son for an imposter.
4) Everyone
what they will do with Christ.
Luke 23:22-23 (NASB95)
22 And he said to them the third time, “Why, what evil has this man done? I have found in Him no guilt [demanding] death; therefore, I will punish Him and release Him.” 23 But they were insistent, with loud voices asking that He be crucified. And their voices [began] to prevail.
Luke 23:24-25 (NASB95)
24 And Pilate pronounced sentence that their demand be granted. 25 And he released the man they were asking for who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, but he delivered Jesus to their will.
John 14:6 (NASB95)
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.
John 1:29 (NASB95)
29 The next day he saw Jesus coming to him and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!
Question: Will Jesus be your king for a day or for eternity?
