1 John : Chapter 5 - Message Study Questions

Message Summary

We have eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ. God is the source of life, love, joy and everything good, so spending eternity with God is eternal life. Hell is eternal separation from God. We can know for sure that we have eternal life, and so have confidence instead of hopelessness, freedom from bondage, safety from the evil one and truth instead of lies. Believers have confidence that they are children of God and confidence and supernatural power in their prayers. Christians are exhorted to keep God first in their life and put nothing above him.

  1. Do you know that you have eternal life? Why?

  2. What are some ways that you primarily show your love for God?

Consider This

John – like he has done throughout this short letter – draws a clear line in the sand. You either believe in Jesus, the Son of God, and have eternal life, or you don’t. There is no middle ground. There is no dabbling in Jesus and going to Heaven.

  1. Do you know whether you have the Son or not (1 John 5:11-12)? What is the condition of those who do not have the Son?

  2. Read 1John 5:11-21 and circle the word “know.” List what Christians can and should “know” about God and themselves from these verses. Why is it important to know these things? (Hint there are more than six)

  3. According to 1 John 5:14-15, how can you have confidence that your prayers will be answered? (See also 1 John 3:21-22)

  4. How can you grow to a place where you want what God wants?

All believers sin (1 John 1:8, 10). But those sins are forgiven by confession and faith (1 John 1:9, 5:1) and based upon Jesus’ substitutionary punishment for our sins (1 John 2:1-2). All sin leads to death, physically and spiritually. However, some sins have a consequence in this life that leads to an early physical death.

  1. It isn’t specified, but what do you think are some sins that might lead to an early death? (see Acts 5:3-5, 1 Corinthians 11:27-30)

  2. In verse 16, John doesn’t say not to pray for the sins leading to death so you can pray for deliverance from both types of sin. But why do you think John said what he said at the end of verse 16?

  3. What do you think it means when the Apostle says, “… that the world around us is under the control of the evil one” (1 John 5:19b)? List some ways that impacts you in your daily life.

  4. What is your protection from the evil one (verse 20)? Is it solid? Why?

  5. What are some “idols” that tempt you in your life?

Moving Forward – Application

  1. Do you need to take steps to know for sure that you are a child of God and have eternal life? Will you contact the church office or a trusted believer to help you with that today?

  2. What can you do this week to help you to want what God wants?

  3. What steps can you take to overcome the idols that tempt you this week?
