He has told you, O mortal, what is good,
and what does the Lord require of you
but to do justice and to love kindness
and to walk humbly with your God? —Micah 6:8

Micah’s Context in 725BC

Israel was a tiny yet strategic piece of land used as the main trade route between Asia and Africa.

Micah warns that the Lord will destroy Israel because of their unjust treatment of the

and powerless.

The Assyrians conquered Israel in 722 BC and destroyed their capital,

.

The people want to know what

thing they can do to make things right between God and the people.

Micah says, “It doesn’t work like that.” Amos 5:23-24 (760-750 BC)

God is more interested in how we

our everyday lives out there than what we we believe in here. (Micah 6:8-9)

Do Justice

God’s justice is about closing the

between the world as it is and the world as it is meant to be.

Justice is a

theme in the scriptures, appearing more than 400 times in the Old Testament.

We serve a God of

. (Deuteronomy 32:4)

Justice doesn’t “

happen.”

Love Kindness

“Kindness” (hesed - Hebrew) includes

, loyalty, and love, which blesses both the giver and receiver.

Hesed appears 250 times in the Old Testament.

Jesus understood

as a way of life, as one’s value system, as one’s total outlook on life.

Kindness is not a weakness, but a way of living that has the

to change the world!

Walk Humbly with God*

Walking humbly with God is being in right

with God. (1 Peter 5:5b-6)

Humility is not

to anyone; it must be put on, which is why Peter says, “clothe yourselves.”

“Humility is the first duty and the highest virtue.” —Andrew Murray, 1828 – 1917

Jesus was always

whatever social ladder had been created. (Luke 14:11, Matthew 20:16, 23:11)

Humility is

from the control of our competitive reflex to oppose, outdo or one-up others.

Do I have a humility

?

“Pride is concerned with who is right. Humility is concerned with what is right.” —Ezra T. Benson

When you have a difference of opinion, do you engage in a win-or-lose debate, or do you listen and

?

How do people

when they are in the spaces around you? Smarter, appreciated, lifted up, understood?

Do they feel accepted, encouraged,

or devalued? Do they experience consolation or desolation?

“Humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less.” —Rick Warren

Pride = “I know best.” Humility = “

knows best.”

Humility requires us to say, “I might be

.”

“To stay humble, never lose gratitude, take the low place, and keep your notebook open, you can learn from anyone.” —Carey Nieuwhof

Humility opens us up to the possibility of wisdom.

Jesus came down to

up. (Philippians 2:3-11)

Politics

Jesus. Love Him.

Action Steps

Intentionally plan and lift others into the

.

When you’re tempted to

someone for their fault, don’t. Confess and address your own instead.
