Use the following questions based on today’s sermon as a starting point for spiritual discussions with your family or a small group of Christian friends this week.
Fellowship—Relationship with a Purpose
- Who is the most thankful person in your life? Is their thanks sincere? How do they demonstrate it?
- How can a Christian show thankfulness to God? List your ideas of ways to express it.
Growth—Thinking About Spiritual Matters
- Greed and gratitude are opposites. What is the foundation and fuel of each attitude?
- Read the story of thankfulness in John 12:1-8. What are some reasons Mary was thankful for Jesus? Was her gratitude reasonable or excessive? Explain your answer.
- Was Judas’ response completely wrong? Why? What attitude or intentions would have improved his words?
- Make a list of the things you would have today if you woke up for only the things you thanked God for yesterday. What should have been on your list?
- Why is it important to be thankful for moments of sorrow, failure, and rejection?
- How does hope in God’s unshakable kingdom (Hebrews 12:28) bolster thankfulness in tough times?
- In good times, do you remember to thank God, or does thankfulness get lost in the excitement? How do you cultivate thanks as a first response?
- Read Psalm 100. What are some of the topics of thankfulness that the song’s author includes? Which ones do you regularly include in your prayers? Are there topics that you sometimes miss?
