Leave A Legacy
Ravi Zacharias, 74, died on May 19th, leaving a wonderful legacy of faith. Born in Madras, India, Ravi surrendered his life to Christ after a teenage suicide attempt. Ravi has preached all over the world, with a mission of “helping the thinker to believe and the believer to think.” Today his three children and an army of those he mentored carry on his work!
Three Steps that Jacob Modeled:
“By faith Jacob, when he was dying, blessed each of Joseph’s sons, and worshiped as he leaned on the top of his staff.” —Hebrews 11:21
Jacob crossed the Jordan as a young man with only his staff as a companion (Genesis 32:10)
In a dream about a stairway to heaven, God promised Jacob to lead him back to the Promised Land and make him into a great nation. Jacob responded by saying,
“Surely the Lord is in this place.” —Genesis 32:16
Jacob, whose name means “deceiver”, was repeatedly deceived by his father-in-law Laban. But the Lord was with him and he prospered.
When he returned to Canaan, Jacob wrestles with God and is given a new name – Israel which means “struggler”. The deceiver became the struggler. Despite his shortcomings, he maintained his faith and lived to 147 years.
At death, your body is buried while your soul goes to the afterlife – immediately to heaven for the believer and to hell for the unbeliever (Luke 16:19-31). As long as you live, the door to salvation is open.
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son that whosoever believes in him will not perish but have everlasting life.” —John 3:16
“By faith Jacob, when he was dying, blessed each of Joseph’s sons, and worshiped as he leaned on the top of his staff.” —Hebrews 11:21
Football star Brandon Burlsworth was ready to meet God when he died in a car accident at 22.
“No man knows when his hour will come.” —Ecclesiastes 9:12
What kind of faith are you passing on? Hawk Nelson lead singer Jon Steingard recently renounced his faith in God so that “people experiencing similar doubts know they are not alone.” But Jesus said,
“He who is not with me is against me.” —Matthew 12:30
You will pass on whatever faith you have.
Carlton Pearson’s story is told in the movie Come Sunday. Pearson was a megachurch pastor who felt God told him that hell isn’t real. Jesus warns us about hell because he doesn’t want us to go there (II Peter 3:9). Today the door of salvation is wide open, but this door will close one day.
“It is appointed unto man once to die and after this the judgment.” —Hebrews 9:27
Jacob spoke to each of his twelve sons, giving them “the blessing appropriate to him” Genesis 49:28. He prophesied both blessing for obedience and judgment for disobedience.
“By faith Jacob, when he was dying, blessed each of Joseph’s sons, and worshiped as he leaned on the top of his staff.” —Hebrews 11:21
“When Jacob had finished giving instructions to his sons, he drew his feet up into the bed, breathed his last and was gathered to his people.” —Genesis 49:33
In his final act of faith, Jacob left instructions for him to be buried in the Promised Land at the same cave where Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, and Rebekah were buried. One day his descendants, the Israelites, would return!
David Wilkerson had no idea April 27, 2011 would be his last day on earth. The founder of Teen Challenge wrote about his struggle with depression in his last posting the morning of his death.
“To those going through the valley and shadow of death, hear this word. Weeping will last thru some dark, awful nights. In that darkness you will soon hear the Father whisper, ‘I am with you. I cannot tell you why right now, but one day it will all make sense. You will see it was all part of my plan. It was no accident.’”
Later that day, David crossed the center line and struck an 18-wheeler on the Neches River Bridge in East Texas. He was killed instantly. By April 29, only a handful of websites in the world received more hits than David’s as tributes poured in. What kind of legacy are you leaving?
