Be Attitudes - Message Study Questions

Message Summary

“Beatitudes” means blessed or happy. It is not a temporary or circumstantial feeling of happiness, but an ongoing state of well-being in relationship to God that belongs to those who follow and respond to Jesus’ ministry. Conduct follows character. Attitude is the application of our character. The beatitudes contain 3 areas of character application; an inward attitude of humility and dependence upon God, an upward attitude which aligns with God’s holiness and an outward attitude of mercy and peacemaking with others, and perseverance under persecution.

  1. What does attitude have to do with fulfillment? How can you change your attitude?

  2. Name some people you admire. Why do you admire them?

Consider This

The qualities of listed in the Beatitudes only come when a person is in a right relationship with Jesus Christ, “for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs” (Matthew 5:10b). Read Matthew 5:1-12.

  1. What does it mean to be poor in spirit, that is, humble? (See Romans 3:9-12) What is the reward? (V 3)

  2. How can someone who is mourning be blessed (verse 4)? What do you think that might look like?

  3. How would you describe being gentle or meek in verse 5? (See also Matthew 11:29, 1 Peter 3:4, Titus 3:2) What is the reward for this character quality and behavior? What do you think that looks like?

  4. What does it mean to hunger and thirst for righteousness or justice? What does it look like? What is the reward?

  5. Can you think of a time when you were merciful to someone? How did it feel? What does God promise to those who are merciful? What does He promise to those who are not (James 2:12-13)?

  6. Read Acts 15:8-9, 1 John 1:8-9, 2 Corinthians 7:1. What does it mean to be pure in heart, both positionally and currently? What is the reward?

  7. What is it like to live not seeing God?

  8. What is a peacemaker (verse 9)? How can you be a peacemaker in your world?

  9. Why are Christians blessed to be persecuted? (verses 10-12)

  10. How does virtue in the current culture compare and contrast with Kingdom virtues?

Moving Forward – Application

  1. Read through the Beatitudes again this week and write out the opposite virtue and result (example Pride = Hell). How does this affect your appreciation of Kingdom virtues?

  2. Think about it. In what ways are you humble and in what ways or circumstances are you arrogant? How can you adjust this week to improve the virtue of humility?

  3. Pray about it. List some people with whom you can practice the Kingdom virtues (humility, gentleness, mercy, purity, and peacemaking) with this week.

  4. Pray about it. Is there someone you can encourage this week who is being persecuted for standing up for his or her faith?
