Read Genesis 17:1-8
How does the Lord describe himself in this passage? Why is God’s might important for Abram’s faith? How have you seen God’s might in your own life? How has that affected your faith? Why does the Lord change Abram’s name to Abraham? What are the elements of God’s promise to Abraham?
Read Genesis 17:9-11
What is the sign of God’s covenant with Abraham and his descendants? How do you think Abraham felt when God gave him this command? How is carrying out this command an act of faith for Abraham at this point in his life?
Read Genesis 17:15-22
Why does the Lord change Sarai’s name to Sarah? How does Abraham respond to God’s promise? The Lord reaffirms his promise and gives the future child the name “Isaac”, which means laughter. Why do you think the Lord would memorialize Abraham’s response in this way? Why would it be important for us to see that God is not afraid of our laughter when we hear what might be impossible?
