JAMES

Developing Patience
September 11, 2022

I. When to be patient:

A. When circumstances are UNCONTROLLABLE.

James 5:7 - Be patient, then, brothers, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop and how patient he is

B. When people are UNCHANGEABLE.

James 5:10 - Brothers, as an example of patience in the face of suffering, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord.

*Macro means: long

*Thumos means: heat

C. When problems are UNEXPLAINABLE.

James 5:11 - … You have heard of Job’s perseverance

II. Why be patient?

A. Because God is in CONTROL.

James 5:8 - You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near.

B. Because God rewards PATIENCE.

James 5:11 - As you know, we consider blessed those who have persevered.

Matthew 5:11-12 - “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

C. Because God is WORKING things out.

James 5:11 - …You have heard of Job’s perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy.

Delay does not mean denial.

III. How to be patient:

(What to do while you’re waiting on God.)

A. Wait EXPECTANTLY.

James 5:7 - Be patient, then, brothers, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop and how patient he is for the autumn and spring rains.

Psalm 130:5 - I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word I put my hope.

We demonstrate our expectation by our preparation.

Isaiah 49:23 - …Then you will know that I am the LORD; those who hope in me will not be disappointed.”

B. Wait QUIETLY.

James 5:9 - Don’t grumble against each other, brothers, or you will be judged. The Judge is standing at the door!

1. Don’t GRUMBLE.

Grumble: “to groan within oneself,” or “to sigh.” It describes an attitude that is internal and unexpressed.

2. Don’t JUDGE.

Habakkuk 2:3 - For the revelation awaits an appointed time; it speaks of the end and will not prove false. Though it linger, wait for it; it will certainly come and will not delay.

C. Wait CONFIDENTLY.

James 5:11 - As you know, we consider blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job’s perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy.

Micah 7:7 - But as for me, I watch in hope for the LORD, I wait for God my Savior; my God will hear me.
