Key Point – The Bible is the Word of God

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” —2 Timothy 3:16-17

How Is The Bible relevant?

“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” —Hebrews 4:12

  • The Bible is Living

Living = Zao - “not only living but causing to live.”

  • The Bible is Active

“For the word of God is living and active” —Hebrews 4:12

Active = energes – Powerful

“So faith comes from hearing, that is, hearing the Good News about Christ.” —Romans 10:17

“So is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.” —Isaiah 55:11 (NIV)

“News articles may inform us, Novels may inspire us, Poetry may enrapture us, but only the living Word of God can transform us.” —Chuck Swindoll

  • The Bible is Piercing.

“Sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow - (like bone marrow)” —Hebrews 4:12

Zoom in – Piercing = diikneomai – to cut through something.

  • The Bible is Discerning

“And discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.” —Hebrews 4:12-13

Zoom in - Discern = Kritikos - “Critic”

“Nothing in all creation is hidden from God. Everything is naked and exposed before his eyes, and he is the one to whom we are accountable.” —Hebrews 4:13

How can the Bible be relevant to my life?

  • Get it into your heart.

“Keep my commands and live; keep my teachings as the apple of your eye. Bind them on your fingers; write them on the tablet of your heart.” —Proverbs 7:2-3

  • Hear it

“We must pay more careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.” —Hebrews 2:1

  • Read it

“Blessed is the one who reads the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear it, and who keep what is written, for the time is near.” —Revelation 1:3

  • Study it

“Now the Bereans Jews were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.” —Acts 17:11

  • Memorize it

“I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” —Psalm 119:11

  • Reflect on it

“Reflect on what I am saying, for the Lord will give you insight into all this.” —2 Timothy 2:7

“Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.” —Joshua 1:8

  • Do what it says.

“Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” —James 1:22

Two sides of the Book:

“Anyone, then, who knows the good he ought to do and doesn’t do it, sins.” —James 4:17 (NIV)

“Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.” —John 13:17
