TERRY MCNABB // OVERVIEW OF TIMOTHY
Sometimes when we are in a crisis, the fundamentals get thrown out the window. 1 Timothy is Paul’s letter to Timothy, reminding him of the basics of a healthy church.
1. Remember to Teach God’s Word
1 Timothy 1:3-5
No other tool will penetrate your heart and change your life like the Word of God will do.
2. Fulfill your calling
1 Timothy 1:18
Every one of us is called and equipped to a unique place of service in the body of Christ.
If you veer outside of your personal calling, you will not be effective.
3. Remember to make prayer a priority
1 Timothy 2:1
Get everybody engaged in praying.
Prayer does amazing things to get our eyes off the problems and onto the Lord.
4. The importance of identifying godly leaders
1 Timothy Chapter 3
We need to know the criteria for identifying who is trustworthy.
Everyone in the church and the community needs to see a walking illustration of the character of God.
5. Attend to your personal spiritual growth
1 Timothy 4:7
An occupational hazard of leadership is getting more preoccupied with running the ministry than with our own personal spiritual growth.
Probably the greatest impact you can have on people around you is for others to watch you personally grow in the Lord.
6. The church is a family
1 Timothy Chapter 5
The picture of a family is the best model for the way we are supposed to relate to each other in the church.
We have to care for one another even when we irritate each other.
7. Remember to protect the church
Timothy 6:20-21
“Guard what was committed to your trust”
At Ephesus, the church needed protection from prosperity doctrine.
Healthy churches are also very fragile.
