HOLY SPIRIT RESTORATION

Sunday, June 12, 2022 – Pastor George Dupree

Did you know that Jesus isn’t concerned about the sins or shortcomings of our past, only by our repentance and the love we give Him now.

After the resurrection, Jesus wanted to finalize some things with Peter. He wanted to expel any self doubt thet Peter may have had.

How could Peter have confidence in himself after the whirlwind of events that had preceded the encounter with Jesus at the seashore?

This is a brief summary of the recent past in Peter’s life.

Peter Says To Jesus You are the Christ!
Matthew 16:16 Simon Peter answered and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

The Mount of Transfiguration
Matthew 17:3 And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Him.

The Predicted Sifting from Satan The Sifter
Luke 22:31-32 And the Lord said, “Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat. {32} “But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to me, strengthen your brethren.”

The Predicted Denial and Peter’s Self Reliance
Matthew 26:30-35 and when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. {31} Then Jesus said to them, “All of you will be made to stumble because of me this night, for it is written: ‘I will strike the Shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’ {32} “But after I have been raised, I will go before you to Galilee.” {33} Peter answered and said to Him, “Even if all are made to stumble because of You, I will never be made to stumble.” {34} Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you that this night, before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” {35} Peter said to Him, “Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny you!” And so said all the disciples.

Soon after this Jesus is arrested, Peter draws a sword and cuts off an ear from one of the high priests servants. Jesus says don’t fight them, I’ve got to go. And Jesus placed the ear back on the man.

When Jesus was arrested Peter followed from a distance, he wanted to stay faithful. Then outside the high priests house, frightened and wearied, Peter denies Jesus three times, the last time with cursing and swearing. Then the rooster crows. Peter realizing what he had done ran and wept bitterly.

After The Resurrection
John 20:19 Then, the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them, “Peace be with you.” 20 When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord.

John 20:21 So Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” 22 And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.

When Jesus had risen He told the women to tell the disciples and emphasized and Peter too!

The encounter at the sea.
John 21:15-19 So when they had eaten breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love (AGAPAO) Me more than these?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love (PHILEO) you.” He said to him, “Feed My lambs.” {16} He said to him again a second time, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love (AGAPAO) Me?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love (PHILEO) you.” He said to him, “Tend My sheep.” {17} He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love (PHILEO) Me?” Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, “Do you love (PHILEO) me?” And he said to Him, “Lord, You know all things; you know that I love (PHILEO) you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed My sheep. {18} “Most assuredly, I say to you, when you were younger, you girded yourself and walked where you wished; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish.” {19} This He spoke, signifying by what death he would glorify God. And when He had spoken this, He said to him, “Follow Me.”

Jesus: Simon, do you LOVE me? - (AGAPAO)
Peter: Yes, Lord; you know that I love (PHILEO) you.
Lord I AM FOND OF YOU, YOU ARE MY FRIEND, And I HAVE AFFECTION FOR YOU.
Jesus: Feed my lambs.

Jesus: Simon, do you LOVE me? (AGAPAO)
Peter: Yes, Lord; you know that I love (PHILEO) you.
Lord I AM FOND OF YOU, YOU ARE MY FRIEND, And I HAVE AFFECTION FOR YOU.
Jesus: Feed my sheep.

Jesus: Simon, son of Jonah, do you love (PHILEO) Me?
Are you fond of me, are you my friend, Do you HAVE AFFECTION FOR ME?
Peter grieved now reminded, BY HIMSELF, NOT JESUS,
Peter: Lord, You know all things; you know that I love (PHILEO) you
Lord you know all things, you know everything about me, and you know I AM FOND OF YOU, YOU ARE MY FRIEND, and I HAVE AFFECTION FOR YOU.
Jesus: Feed my sheep.

The Day Of Pentecost
Acts 2:14 But Peter, standing up with the eleven, raised his voice
Acts 2:37 Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?” 38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.”

Acts 2: 41Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them.

Five significant things that took place in Peter’s life at this time
1. Peter Fell Short – Matthew 26:74
2. Peter was remorseful and probably asked for God’s forgiveness – Matthew 26:75
3. Peter received the Holy Spirit – John 20:22
4. Peter was baptized in the Holy Spirit – Acts 2:4
5. Peter fufilled the word of the Lord to strengthen his bretheren – Luke 22:32

Jesus isn’t concerned about the sins or shortcomings of our past, only by our repentance and the love we give Him now.
