I. What Was the of the Plagues?

         A. Hardening of Pharoah’s

                  1. ׁהשק – to make hard, to harden

Exodus 7:3-4 “But I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and though I multiply my signs and wonders in the land of Egypt, Pharaoh will not listen to you. Then I will lay my hand on Egypt and bring my hosts, my people the children of Israel, out of the land of Egypt by great acts of judgment.”

Proverbs 28:14 “Blessed is the one who fears the Lord always, but whoever hardens his heart will fall into calamity.”

                  2. קזח - to bind on tightly, gird on, grow strong, harden

Exodus 7:13 “Still Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, and he would not listen to them, as the Lord had said.”

Ezekiel 30:21 “Son of man, I have broken the arm of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and behold, it has not been bound up, to heal it by binding it with a bandage, so that it may become strong to wield the sword.”

                  3. כָּבֵד – heavy, oppressing, weighty, unresponsive, thick

Exodus 7:14 “Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘Pharaoh’s heart is hardened; he refuses to let the people go.’”

Proverbs 27:3 “A stone is heavy, and sand is weighty, but a fool’s provocation is heavier than both.”

         B. of God
            (Exodus 7:5; 8:10-11; 9:14-16, 29-30;11:4-8; Philippians 2:10-11)

Exodus 7:5 “The Egyptians shall know that I am the Lord, when I stretch out my hand against Egypt and bring out the people of Israel from among them.”

Exodus 8:10-11 “And he said, ‘Tomorrow.’ Moses said, ‘Be it as you say, so that you may know that there is no one like the Lord our God. The frogs shall go away from you and your houses and your servants and your people. They shall be left only in the Nile.’”

Exodus 9:29-30 “Moses said to him, ‘As soon as I have gone out of the city, I will stretch out my hands to the Lord. The thunder will cease, and there will be no more hail, so that you may know that the earth is the Lord’s.’”

Exodus 11:4-8 “So Moses said, ‘Thus says the Lord: “About midnight I will go out in the midst of Egypt, and every firstborn in the land of Egypt shall die, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sits on his throne, even to the firstborn of the slave girl who is behind the handmill, and all the firstborn of the cattle. There shall be a great cry throughout all the land of Egypt, such as there has never been, nor ever will be again. But not a dog shall growl against any of the people of Israel, either man or beast, that you may know that the Lord makes a distinction between Egypt and Israel.” And all these your servants shall come down to me and bow down to me, saying, “Get out, you and all the people who follow you.” And after that I will go out.’ And he went out from Pharaoh in hot anger.”

II. Was God in What He Did to Pharoah?

         (Romans 9:17-18; Psalm 105:25; Romans 9:14-16,19-23)

Romans 9:17-18 “For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, ‘For this very purpose I have raised you up, that I might show my power in you, and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.’ So then he has mercy on whomever he wills, and he hardens whomever he wills.”

Psalm 105:25 “He turned their hearts to hate his people, to deal craftily with his servants.

God’s Providence – “God is continually involved with all created things in such a way that he (1) keeps them existing and maintaining the properties with which he created them; (2) cooperates with created things in every action, directing their distinctive properties to cause them to act as they do; and (3) directs them to fulfill his purposes.”1

Romans 9:14-16 “What shall we say then? Is there injustice on God’s part? By no means! For he says to Moses, ‘I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.’ So then it depends not on human will or exertion, but on God, who has mercy.”
