Part of Foundations of the Kingdom—Matthew Part 1
March 26, 2023
ICEBREAKER: Share a memory about a time showing off ended badly (could be your own showing off, your sibling, etc). Why do you think this story is so memorable for you?
First, read Matthew 6:1. This verse sums up Jesus’ entire teaching in this passage. What does he mean by “practice your righteousness”? What is the difference between doing these things to be seen by others versus doing them to be seen by God? How do the rewards differ?
Then, Jesus gives several examples of how people “practice their righteousness” in order to win the approval of others. Choose from the following and discuss as time allows:
Giving to the Needy: Matthew 6:2-4.
What does this passage tell us about the approach Jesus wants us to have toward giving to the needy? Why might secrecy matter? For extra credit: how does Jesus’ instruction here compare to Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians 12:12-31?
Praying: Matthew 6:5-13
Where do you go when you pray? What do you find yourself praying for most often? Why does Jesus instruct us to go into “our room”? What themes do you notice in the “Lord’s Prayer” (verses 9-13) and what does this tell you about prayer?
Forgiving: Matthew 6:14-15
What does this passage tell you about the relationship between forgiving and being forgiven? When do you find it hardest to forgive? Easiest? Why? How do these words from Jesus affect your perspective on forgiveness?
Fasting: Matthew 6:16-18
What is the purpose of fasting? Have you ever fasted before? What has the result been? In what situations might fasting be helpful for you? If you’d like to explore fasting more, check out https://thecreeksidechurch.org/practices
How can we pray for you this week?
