There was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job. And this man was blameless and upright, fearing God and shunning evil. —Job 1:1 (NIV)

Sometimes it doesn’t

how you are

“Does Job fear God for nothing?” Satan replied. “Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has? You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land. But now stretch out your hand and strike everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face.” —Job 1:9-11 (NIV)

Will we

to praise God Even If we go through a ?

  • His oxen and donkeys - Job 1:14-15
  • His sheep – Job 1:16
  • His camels – Job 1:17
  • His kids – Job 1:18-19

At this, Job got up and tore his robe and shaved his head. Then he fell to the ground in worship and said: “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will depart. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised.” —Job 1:20-21 (NIV)

What if it

?

So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord and afflicted Job with painful sores from the soles of his feet to the crown of his head. Then Job took a piece of broken pottery and scraped himself with it as he sat among the ashes. —Job 2:7-8 (NIV)

What if

are not ?

His wife said to him, “Are you still maintaining your integrity? Curse God and die!” —Job 2:9 (NIV)

Do we have

that will with us?

When Job’s three friends, Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite, heard about all the troubles that had come upon him, they set out from their homes and met together by agreement to go and sympathize with him and comfort him. When they saw him from a distance, they could hardly recognize him; they began to weep aloud, and they tore their robes and sprinkled dust on their heads. Then they sat on the ground with him for seven days and seven nights. No one said a word to him, because they saw how great his suffering was. —Job 2:11-13 (NIV)

Notes:

Discussion Questions:

  1. How would you respond to someone asking you why bad things happen to good people?

  2. Read Job 1:8-11. It is common for us to think faith is conditional on our circumstances (like Satan). What do you think helped Job get to a level beyond that?

  3. Read Job 2:11-13. Do you have friends like this? How are you fostering those relationships?

  4. Who is someone you can reach out to this week either to encourage because of what they are going through or to be encouraged because of what you are going through?
