GODLY CORRECTION

“For these commands are a lamp, this teaching is a light, and the corrections of discipline are the way to life” (Proverbs 6:23)
How to grow & mature through Godly correction:

I. Let’s get our

straight…

A. Reproof defined: “To call attention to remises [carelessness or inattention] with a kindly intention to correct or assist.”

B. Correction defined: “To alter or adjust so as to bring to some standard or required condition.”

C. Rebuke defined: “To criticize sharply; to reprimand.”

II. Correction is a valuable part of Christian

.

A. It happens to the “best” of us! (Prov. 9:9)

B. Produces a harvest of righteousness. (Heb. 12:11)

C. Smoothes out the rough edges. (Prov. 27:17)

III. Biblical

for reproof & correction:

A. It’s not an option. (Leviticus 19:17; Luke 17:3-4)

B. Wise people love it; fools hate it. (Proverbs 12:1; Proverbs 9:8)

IV. Practical

of reproof & correction:

A. When

you correct someone?

  1. When you can’t forget an offense. (Proverbs 28:23)

  2. When they have significantly fallen short of God’s expectations or standards.

  3. When they have consistently fallen short of God’s expectations or standards.

B. When

to correct someone? (Proverbs 26:17)

  1. “If you are not part of the problem or part of the
    solution … then, don’t be part of the conversation!”

  2. When you are angry (In the flesh). (Prov. 22:29)

  3. When the issue is simply a personal preference. (Pr. 25:28)

C. How to

reproof & correction?

  1. Do it quickly & privately. (Eph. 4:26-27; Matt. 18:15)

  2. Get your heart right first. (Luke 6:41-42)

  3. Speak the truth in love. (Ephesians 4:15; 1 Peter 4:8)

  4. Share your own faults-relate to them. (James 3:2a; 1 Pet 5:6)

  5. Use the Word (Bible). (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

  6. Communicate clearly. (Proverbs 25:11 - ESV)

D. How to

reproof & correction:

  1. Be humble, positive and “in the spirit.” (Galatians 5:16)

  2. Don’t react negatively or defensively. (Prov. 3:11; Prov. 13:13)

  3. Receive it and listen! Take it from God. (Prov. 12:15; Prov. 13:1)

  4. Repent and ask for forgiveness. (Proverbs 13:18)

  5. Thank them. (Psalms 141:5; Proverbs 25:12)

  6. Pray about it & get godly input. (Proverbs 15:12)

  7. Take action to make it right! (2 Corinthians 7:11)
