Hebrews 7:1-28
7:11 | Perfection here does not mean “morally perfect” but “reaching the intended goal.” Because the Levitical priesthood could not attain God’s ultimate goal of establishing an eternal relationship between Himself and His people, a different priesthood was needed. Only Jesus Christ - the fulfillment of the Melchizedekan priesthood - could accomplish that role.
7:18-19 | The law was set aside or annulled because it could not make those who tried to follow it sinless (Acts 13:39; Rom. 3:20; 7:7; 8:3; Gal. 2:16; 3:21; 4:9).
7:20-22 | Saying that Jesus is the surety of the New Covenant means that He is the guarantor of it. The Old Covenant relied on an earthly, human priesthood, but the New Covenant relies on Jesus’ eternal priesthood and is guaranteed by God’s oath, making it better - more sure and steadfast - than the Old Covenant (Ps. 110:4).
7:24-25 | Because the eternal, unchanging Christ is the High Priest of every believer, He is able to shepherd God’s people all the way home to glory. No other priest will ever be necessary(Rom. 8:34; 1 Thess. 5:23).
7:28 | This verse provides a final contrast between Jesus and the OT priests. The OT priests were sinful, weak humans who were appointed by the law. Jesus, the perfect Son, was annointed an eternal high priest by God’s oath.
