“Learning to Follow God Together”
Main Point: The faith journey can be challenging, which is why we need to take this trip together.
We have to learn to follow where and when God leads.
Whenever the cloud lifted from above the tent, the Israelites set out; wherever the cloud settled, the Israelites encamped. At the LORD’S command the Israelites set out, and at his command they encamped. As long as the cloud stayed over the tabernacle, they remained in camp. —Numbers 9:17-18
We have to learn how to listen to God and each other.
The LORD said to Moses: “Make two trumpets of hammered silver, and use them for calling the community together and for having the camps set out.” —Numbers 10:1-2
We have to learn to invite others to join us on this journey.
But Moses said, “Please do not leave us. You know where we should camp in the wilderness, and you can be our eyes. If you come with us, we will share with you whatever good things the LORD gives us.” —Numbers 10:31-32
We have to learn that we need each other on this journey.
So Moses went out and told the people what the LORD had said. He brought together seventy of their elders and had them stand around the tent. Then the LORD came down in the cloud and spoke with him, and he took some of the power of the Spirit that was on him and put it on the seventy elders. When the Spirit rested on them, they prophesied—but did not do so again. —Numbers 11:24-25
Takeaway – And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching. (Hebrews 10:24-25)
Discussion Questions
1. Getting started… Talk with each other about a memorable trip that you’ve taken. It might be memorable for any number of reasons!
2.Has your journey with God been a “straight line” or a circuitous route? What are some of the things you’ve experienced on this journey that have stood out for you?
3.Some people sense God speaking to them often and clearly; others infrequently and vaguely. What is your experience with hearing God speak to you?
4.Jesus made it very clear that we are not to try to do life alone, but some of us have a hard time asking for help, and others of us really like doing everything ourselves (at least until we can’t anymore!) Where do you fall on that, and what do you think Jesus would say to you about that?
