Matthew 22:36-38 NIV
36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” 37 Jesus replied: “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment.
More than just the music before the sermon, worship is a key way we show our love and gratitude to the Lord for what He has done in our lives. There are many ways we can worship God. Worshipping through music is song is one of the most clear and important ways.
Worship the Lord with Song
Psalms 100:1-2 NIV
1 Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. 2 Worship the Lord with gladness;come before him with joyful songs.
Psalms 95:1 NIV
1 Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord;let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation.
But Pastor T, have you heard me sing?!? Well, there is scripture for you too.
Psalms 98:4 NIV
4 Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth,burst into jubilant song with music;
There is a battle over our ability and willingness to sing and worship God. It goes back to the fall of Lucifer.
Ezekiel 28:12-17 NKJV
12 “Son of man, take up a lamentation for the king of Tyre, and say to him, ‘Thus says the Lord God:“You were the seal of perfection,Full of wisdom and perfect in beauty. 13 You were in Eden, the garden of God;Every precious stone was your covering:The sardius, topaz, and diamond,Beryl, onyx, and jasper,Sapphire, turquoise, and emerald with gold. The workmanship of your timbrels and pipesWas prepared for you on the day you were created. 14 “You were the anointed cherub who covers;I established you;You were on the holy mountain of God;You walked back and forth in the midst of fiery stones. 15 You were perfect in your ways from the day you were created,Till iniquity was found in you. 16 “By the abundance of your tradingYou became filled with violence within,And you sinned; Therefore I cast you as a profane thingOut of the mountain of God;And I destroyed you, O covering cherub,From the midst of the fiery stones. 17 “Your heart was lifted up because of your beauty; You corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor;I cast you to the ground,I laid you before kings,That they might gaze at you.
Isaiah 14:12-15 NKJV
12 “How you are fallen from heaven,O Lucifer, son of the morning! How you are cut down to the ground,You who weakened the nations! 13 For you have said in your heart:‘I will ascend into heaven,I will exalt my throne above the stars of God;I will also sit on the mount of the congregationOn the farthest sides of the north; 14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds,I will be like the Most High.’ 15 Yet you shall be brought down to Sheol,To the lowest depths of the Pit.
Proverbs 16:18 NIV
18 Pride goes before destruction,a haughty spirit before a fall.
It was pride that caused Lucifer to fall from his position and purpose in God.
No wonder, pride is a root issue of almost every sin and rebellion in our lives.
James 4:10 NIV
10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.
James 4:6 NIV
6 But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says:“God opposes the proudbut shows favor to the humble.”
Pride is more than just a bad Christian behavior, when we operate in pride, we are cooperating in the spirit of Lucifer.
Worship is our God given weapon to win the battle over pride. It calls us to exalt God above all else.
Our worship is to and for God, but there are blessings to obeying everything God calls us to do.
Deuteronomy 28:1-2 NIV
1 If you fully obey the Lord your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations on earth. 2 All these blessings will come on you and accompany you if you obey the Lord your God:
When We Praise:
We Receive Strength
Psalms 8:2 NLT
2 You have taught children and infantsto tell of your strength, silencing your enemiesand all who oppose you.
Matthew 21:15-16 NIV
15 But when the chief priests and the teachers of the law saw the wonderful things he did and the children shouting in the temple courts, “Hosanna to the Son of David,” they were indignant. 16 “Do you hear what these children are saying?” they asked him. “Yes,” replied Jesus, “have you never read, “ ‘From the lips of children and infants you, Lord, have called forth your praise’ ?”
Jesus didn’t misquote anything! In the bible, Praise is connected to Strength.
We Receive Breakthrough over Enemies and Opposition!
Matthew 1:3 NKJV
3 Judah begot Perez and Zerah by Tamar, Perez begot Hezron, and Hezron begot Ram.
“Judah begot Perez”
Judah means “Praise” and Perez means “Breakthrough”
Praise gives birth to breakthrough. Today’s praise is the seed for tomorrow’s breakthrough!
2 Chronicles 20:2-4 NLT
2 Messengers came and told Jehoshaphat, “A vast army from Edom is marching against you from beyond the Dead Sea. They are already at Hazazon-tamar.” (This was another name for En-gedi.) 3 Jehoshaphat was terrified by this news and begged the Lord for guidance. He also ordered everyone in Judah to begin fasting. 4 So people from all the towns of Judah came to Jerusalem to seek the Lord’s help.
2 Chronicles 20:15-17 NLT
15 He said, “Listen, all you people of Judah and Jerusalem! Listen, King Jehoshaphat! This is what the Lord says: Do not be afraid! Don’t be discouraged by this mighty army, for the battle is not yours, but God’s. 16 Tomorrow, march out against them. You will find them coming up through the ascent of Ziz at the end of the valley that opens into the wilderness of Jeruel. 17 But you will not even need to fight. Take your positions; then stand still and watch the Lord’s victory. He is with you, O people of Judah and Jerusalem. Do not be afraid or discouraged. Go out against them tomorrow, for the Lord is with you!”
2 Chronicles 20:21-22 NLT
21 After consulting the people, the king appointed singers to walk ahead of the army, singing to the Lord and praising him for his holy splendor. This is what they sang:“Give thanks to the Lord;his faithful love endures forever!” 22 At the very moment they began to sing and give praise, the Lord caused the armies of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir to start fighting among themselves.
2 Chronicles 20:27 NLT
27 Then all the men returned to Jerusalem, with Jehoshaphat leading them, overjoyed that the Lord had given them victory over their enemies.
We Receive Faith for Our Breakthrough
Psalms 34:3 NIV
3 Glorify the Lord with me;let us exalt his name together.
Can God get any bigger? NO, but when we worship he gets bigger TO US.
What are you going to allow to be or become bigger to you?
Your God or your problem?
Your savior or your situation.
Acts of the Apostles 16:25-36 NLT
25 Around midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening. 26 Suddenly, there was a massive earthquake, and the prison was shaken to its foundations. All the doors immediately flew open, and the chains of every prisoner fell off! 27 The jailer woke up to see the prison doors wide open. He assumed the prisoners had escaped, so he drew his sword to kill himself. 28 But Paul shouted to him, “Stop! Don’t kill yourself! We are all here!” 29 The jailer called for lights and ran to the dungeon and fell down trembling before Paul and Silas. 30 Then he brought them out and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” 31 They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved, along with everyone in your household.” 32 And they shared the word of the Lord with him and with all who lived in his household. 33 Even at that hour of the night, the jailer cared for them and washed their wounds. Then he and everyone in his household were immediately baptized. 34 He brought them into his house and set a meal before them, and he and his entire household rejoiced because they all believed in God. 35 The next morning the city officials sent the police to tell the jailer, “Let those men go!” 36 So the jailer told Paul, “The city officials have said you and Silas are free to leave. Go in peace.”
He’s worthy, He’s holy, He’s mighty, He loves me, and He’s with me…And whatever I’m up against today He is for me!
We Receive Breakthrough over Discouragement
Isaiah 61:3 NIV
3 and provide for those who grieve in Zion—to bestow on them a crown of beautyinstead of ashes, the oil of joyinstead of mourning, and a garment of praiseinstead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness,a planting of the Lordfor the display of his splendor.
We Receive Breakthrough for Direction
Acts of the Apostles 13:2 NLT
2 One day as these men were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Appoint Barnabas and Saul for the special work to which I have called them.”
Isaiah 62:10 NIV
10 Pass through, pass through the gates!Prepare the way for the people.Build up, build up the highway!Remove the stones.Raise a banner for the nations.
We Receive Breakthrough Over Shame.
Luke 7:36-47 NIV
36 When one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to have dinner with him, he went to the Pharisee’s house and reclined at the table. 37 A woman in that town who lived a sinful life learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee’s house, so she came there with an alabaster jar of perfume. 38 As she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them. 39 When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is—that she is a sinner.” 40 Jesus answered him, “Simon, I have something to tell you.”“Tell me, teacher,” he said. 41 “Two people owed money to a certain moneylender. One owed him five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. 42 Neither of them had the money to pay him back, so he forgave the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more?” 43 Simon replied, “I suppose the one who had the bigger debt forgiven.” “You have judged correctly,” Jesus said. 44 Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet, but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45 You did not give me a kiss, but this woman, from the time I entered, has not stopped kissing my feet. 46 You did not put oil on my head, but she has poured perfume on my feet. 47 Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—as her great love has shown. But whoever has been forgiven little loves little.”
Acts of the Apostles 13:22 NLT
22 But God removed Saul and replaced him with David, a man about whom God said, ‘I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart. He will do everything I want him to do.’
Hebrews 4:16 NIV
16 Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.
Hebrews 4:16 NLT
16 So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.
Psalm 102:18-22 ESV
18 Let this be recorded for a generation to come,so that a people yet to be created may praise the Lord: 19 that he looked down from his holy height;from heaven the Lord looked at the earth, 20 to hear the groans of the prisoners,to set free those who were doomed to die, 21 that they may declare in Zion the name of the Lord, and in Jerusalem his praise, 22 when peoples gather together, and kingdoms, to worship the Lord.
2 Corinthians 5:17 NASB
17 Therefore if anyone is in Christ, this person is a new creation; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.
I Peter 2:9-10 NKJV
9 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; 10 who once were not a people but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy.
Ezekiel 46:9-10 NIV
9 “ ‘When the people of the land come before the Lord at the appointed festivals, whoever enters by the north gate to worship is to go out the south gate; and whoever enters by the south gate is to go out the north gate. No one is to return through the gate by which they entered, but each is to go out the opposite gate. 10 The prince is to be among them, going in when they go in and going out when they go out.
