The Basis of Our Hope
February 10, 2024

Introduction

Paul states that grief is natural to all of our experiences; however, the believer can grieve differently from the world who has no hope. Our hope is founded on three certainties which the Lord promises.

I. The Promise of E__ L__ (vss. 13-14)

Eternal Life speaks…
not only of duration, but also abundance
not only of quantity, but also of quality

II. The Promise of the R___ B___ (vs. 15)

Doctrinal Point #10 of our Statement of Belief:
We believe that God commands everyone everywhere to believe the gospel by turning to Him in repentance and receiving the Lord Jesus Christ. We believe that God will raise the dead bodily and judge the world, assigning the unbeliever to condemnation and eternal conscious punishment and the believer to eternal blessedness and joy with the Lord in the new heaven and the new earth, to the praise of His glorious grace. Amen.

Questions:
If I have a new, resurrected body, will I be able to recognize others in heaven
How can I look forward to heaven if a unbelieving dear one will not be there?
What about the bodies that are cremated or lost?
How can God “resurrect” bodies that are not even in a cemetery?

III. The Promise of Jesus’ R__ (vs. 16)

Doctrinal Point #9 of our Statement of Belief:
We believe in the personal, bodily and premillennial return of our Lord Jesus Christ. The coming of Christ, at a time known only to God, demands constant expectancy and, as our blessed hope, motivates the believer to godly living, sacrificial service and energetic mission.

Conclusion/Application:

Be Alert! (5:1-6a)
2. Be Prepared! (5:6b-11)
