Discussion Questions:
Use the following questions based on today’s sermon as a starting point for spiritual discussions with your family or a small group of Christian friends this week.
Fellowship—Relationship with a Purpose
• How is your relationship with your mother? How has it changed over the years?
• Are there any moms in the church that you could encourage? Think about ways to do so this week.
Growth—Thinking About Spiritual Matters
• Read 2 Timothy 1:5. What kinds of contributions do you think Timothy’s mom and grandma made to his faith? How can moms invest in the spiritual growth of their children?
• Choose one of the following moms from Scripture and read her story: Hannah (1 Sam 1), Sarah (Genesis 21), Mary (Luke 1), Hagar (Genesis 16), Moses’ mom (Exodus 2), or Elizabeth (Luke 1). What qualities made her a good mother? Why could she be a good example to follow?
• Moms can pass both blessings and sins to their children (see Exodus 34:7). Is there any way to avoid passing on the latter? If not, how can we minimize its impact?
• Do your parents sins influence you or do they define you? What is the difference?
• Regardless of their good or poor contributions, we must still value our parents. Read Ephesians 6:1-3. What two actions should we choose when it comes to parents?
• Was obedience required and/or expected in your home growing up? How does obeying our parents prepare us to obey God?
• What are some ways we show honor to our parents? If your relationship with your parents is strained, how can you still show honor to them?
• When is the last time you talked to your parents or grandparents? Make a call today and talk to them, thanking them for the gift of life and the lessons they taught you. If your parents are no longer around, consider calling someone you know in the church and honoring their contributions instead.
Prayer – Taking Your Thoughts to God
• Pray for your mother, if she is around. And if you are a mom, pray for your children.
• Ask God to help you have a desire to honor and respect the previous generation
