Uncommon Way
“Therefore, prepare your minds for action; be self-controlled; set your hope fully on the grace to
be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed. As obedient children, do not conform to the evil
desires you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in
all you do; for it is written: ‘Be holy, because I am holy.’” 1 Peter 1:13-16
To be holy means to…
a. Be different, unique, or one of a kind
“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion,
kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever
grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgives you. And over all
these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.
Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to
peace. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish
one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in
your hearts to God. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the
Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” Colossians 3:12-17
b. Be set apart for a purpose
“For those God foreknew, he also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of his Son, that he
might be the first born among many brothers. And those he predestined, he also called; those
he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified.” Romans 8:29-30
c. Be perfectly good
“Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. Put on your new nature, created to be
like God—truly righteous and holy.” Ephesians 4:24
Big Idea: As a follower of Jesus, you are holy—set apart for God’s purposes. So be holy in all
you do!
- God is Holy
“But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: ‘Be holy, because
I am holy.” 1 Peter 1:15-16
Who among the gods is like you, O Lord? Who is like you—majestic in holiness, awesome in
glory, working wonders?” Exodus 15:11
“There is no one holy like the Lord; there is no one besides you; there is no Rock like our God.” 1
Samuel 2:2
“My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the
humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty
One has done great things for me—holy is his name.” Luke 1:47-49
“In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted, and the
train of his robe filled the temple. Above him were seraphs, each with six wings: with two wings
they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. And
they were calling to one another: ‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of
his glory.’ At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was
filled with smoke. ‘Woe to me!’ I cried. ‘I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live
among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.’” Isaiah
6:1-5
2. In Christ, we are holy, and are becoming holy
“But because of his great love for us, God who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even
when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us
up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus…For we are God’s
workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to
do.” Ephesians 2:4-10
“We have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.” Hebrews
10:10
“Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the
same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. But when this priest (Jesus Christ) had offered
for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God…By one sacrifice he has
made perfect forever those who are being made holy.” Hebrews 10:14
“So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: take your everyday, ordinary life—your
sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering.
Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don’t become so well-
adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on
God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and
quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of
immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you.” Romans
12:1-2 MSG
