This 2-week series zeroes in on a few questions that Paul asks about God.
Romans 8:31-32…
- “What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?”
Paul begins by affirming that if God is on our side, no opposition can prevail against us.
Here’s what we see: We are
God’s character is inextricably bound to his people. His character is such that he is entirely for, in favor of, love directed toward his people.
When we face problems and trials, God is immediately beside us and going through it with us. And, if we believe scripture, we already know how it will end: nothing can ever separate us from his love.
Of course, this belief raises a natural question: How can we know God is for us?
In between the introduction and conclusion, Paul provides three important historical facts to demonstrate that God is for us and not against us.
- The first question is that if he didn‘t spare his Son, then why would he hold back from giving us what we need?
- “Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?” Matthew 6:26
- The next question is, “Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies.” Romans 8:33
The Greek word for “justify” is a legal term and can mean to demonstrate evidence of the truth—in this case, the evidence is that we are righteous.
- –“justify” also means to declare righteous or innocent.
- The last question is, “Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.” Romans 8:34
According to scripture…this is how we can know God is for us and not against us.
You are assured of God’s love for you. Jesus was clear. Scripture is clear. Paul attested to it.
In the first two verses of Romans 8 there is a promise to us…
- Romans 8:1,2
“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the spirit. For the law of the spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.”
