Abundant Life- a series looking at the Life of Jesus through the book of John.
The Gospel of John has been called “a pool in which a child may wade and an elephant may swim.”
Goals of The Gospel of John:
Discover Who Jesus is.
Discover the Life we have in Jesus.
Discover His wounds and witness His miracles for ourselves.
Discover His conversations with people, not just His sermons and teachings.
John 1:1-3 ESV
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made.
Who you say Jesus is says a lot About How you will follow Jesus.
Conversation is good but at some point, we need conclusion.
Was He a good man, or the Savior?
Was He a prophet or The Son of God?
Did He have good character or was He sinless?
1- Jesus identity as the Son who reveals the father.
We can debate peoples character, their behavior and their actions- and these are all important but in order to truly follow Jesus, we have to agree and understand His origin and His purpose, not just His behavior and character.
Our understanding of the fullness of who Jesus is brings conclusion and resolve to our lives, His purpose gives us meaning.
The word was the power that set the world in perfect order and would keep it going in perfect order.
God’s word was how He accomplishes His will.
Isaiah 55:11 ESV
So shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.
2- Jesus brings life and light into the chaotic world.
John 1:4-10ESV
In him was life,[a] and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him. 8 He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light. The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him.
In Him was Life:
Bios- Biological Life.
Psuche- soul-life. Mind, will, emotions.
Zoe- Eternal or divine life. The life principle. Complete meaning, definition. It completes the other definitions.
His Life is your Light.
Practical Implications:
1-Jesus is the answer to our broken relationship with God and our broken relationships with others.
2-Jesus is the answer to a meaningless existence.
John 1:38-39 ESV
38 Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them, “What are you seeking?” And they said to him, “Rabbi” (which means Teacher), “where are you staying?” 39 He said to them, “Come and you will see.” So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour.[j]
3- Jesus is the answer to the problems of the world.
John 1:50-51 ESV
50 Jesus answered him, “Because I said to you, ‘I saw you under the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater things than these.” 51 And he said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you,[m] you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”
Discussion Questions:
1- Describe the term abundance? In what areas of your life are you walking in abundance? What does this term have to do with Jesus’ life?
2- How does Johns Gospel reveal how our relationship with Jesus can look like?
3- Read John 1:1. What does this scripture say about who Jesus is? Why does His origin matter so much to our lives?
4- Read Isaiah 55:11. What is one word god has spoke over you that you have seen come into existence? What is one word that you are still believing for?
5- What is Zoe life? How is Zoe life different from the other definitions?
