- What did you learn about Jesus that was unexpected? What does Jesus’ treatment of the women caught in adultery reveal about His character? How is Jesus different than the religious leaders?
- Read John 8:1-6b. Describe the situation from the text. Who were the people involved? What are their motives? Why do they bring the woman to Jesus?
- How were the religious leaders attempting to trap Jesus, so they could accuse him? What were the consequences if Jesus affirmed the punishment? If Jesus didn’t affirm the punishment?
- Read John 8:6b-8. Though John did not record what Jesus was writing, he did record what Jesus said. What qualification did Jesus give for those who would throw the first stone at the woman?
- Read John 8:9-11. Why did the people leave? What did Jesus teach them about the nature of sin and condemnation?
- Jesus forgave the woman of her sin demonstrating his authority and his compassion. What does He tell her to do as a result of being forgiven?
- What does this passage teach us about the nature of God’s forgiveness and the implications of being forgiven?
