
Discussion Questions - Luke 7:1-17
- Think again about all that we’ve come through in the Sermon on the Plain. (Lk. 6:17-49) After Jesus had given these teachings, what questions do you think would have been in people’s minds? What follow up questions might you have had for Jesus?
- How do you think it was that the Centurion had heard of Jesus? (v.2)
- Even this powerful man turned to Jesus out of desperation. When you find yourself in a desperate situation, do you turn to Jesus?
- Why is the relationship between this Centurion and the Jews in the area so noteworthy?
- Why is the relationship between this Centurion and his servant so noteworthy?
- The Jewish leaders believed that Jesus could help. If they didn’t they wouldn’t have come to him and asked. How could Jewish leaders, in general, know what Jesus could do but still not turn to Him in faith themselves? (v.4)
- Why did Jesus start making his way to the Centurion’s home? Was it the plea of the Jewish leaders? Was it the Centurion’s position? Was it the illness of the slave? (v.6)
- Why do you think the Centurion sent another group to Jesus before He had arrived? (v.6b)
- The Centurion understood authority structures as well as anyone. How does his understanding help to inform him concerning Jesus? (v.8)
- What does Jesus mean when He says this Centurion has faith?
- What makes the widow’s situation so desperate? (v.12)
- Who or what did the people think Jesus was after He raised the boy back to life? (v.16)
- How does the raising of this boy point to the future reality of the final resurrection? (1 Thes. 4:13-18)
- What do these two miracles tell us about the heart of Jesus?
- What does God want you to do this week because of what Jesus did in these stories?
