DQ: What Child Is This? - Pt. 2
December 10, 2023

INTRODUCTION: Share any personal or family traditions that help you “center your soul on the incarnation” during the Advent season.

READ: Matthew 2:1-6
“After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, “Where is the one who has been born King of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” When King Herod heard this he was disturbed and all Jerusalem with him. When he had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Messiah (Christ) was to be born. “In Bethlehem in Judea,” they replied, “for this is what the prophet has written:
“But you, Bethlehem in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.”

Begin the time by praying together.

DISCUSS:
1. How does using the name “Christ” as a title rather than a last name change your approach to Jesus?
Here is some scripture if needed: Matthew 16.16, I Cor. 1.23-34, I Cor, 2.2, I Cor.15.3-4

  1. The wise men from the east knew better than the chief priests and teachers in Jerusalem that Jesus had been born. Share an occasion where you learned an important truth by an unexpected someone from “out in left field”?

  2. Pastor Robert is (once again) inviting us to see a bigger Jesus than we may be used to. This Christ is one who longs to provide many and varied ministries to his children. Do you find this “disturbing” to your status quo, or does it make you want to travel miles to learn more?

  3. The gifts of the Magi foretell three of Christ’s ministries to his people. Myrrh is to anoint prophets who bring God to the people. Incense is used by priests who help people get to God. Gold is used in the coronation of kings. As we approach the Christmas season, what anointing of Jesus do you need today?

    • Might you be confused? Are you in need of a prophet who can help you understand a God who might seem far off? Do you need the Word to be made flesh? If applicable, share how you are experiencing this.

    • Are you struggling in your prayer life? Are you in need of a priest who can take you toward God as incense rises up to heaven? (Heb 4:14-16) If applicable, share how you are experiencing this.

    • Are you wrestling God for control over some area of your life? Trying to figure things out and coming up empty? Do you need to allow Christ to reign supreme? If applicable, share how you are experiencing this.

PRAY: Christ, You alone hold our hope. You command our destinies such that we have no guilt in life, nor fear in death. Our arms and hearts own you. We respond in love and welcome you as prophet, priest and king. We are your manger throne on Earth. Amen
