1.) Identify a “foggy” feeling in your life that might be hiding lies. Describe the feeling.
EXAMPLE: A dull sense of discouragement. Others could be:
- A short fuse: quickness to anger but not sure why
- A feeling of being overwhelmed or anxious
- A sense of entitlement or superiority over others
- Tension or stress (There are many more!)
2.) Identify any lies hiding in that foggy feeling. What am I believing about God or life or myself that makes me feel that way? List specific lies.
Working with the example above of “a dull sense of discouragement” lies could be:
- I’m alone.
- God is tired of me and my sin.
- I deserve an easy and convenient life.
- God won’t be faithful to the people I love so I need to worry about them.
3.) Identify a scripture that counteracts that lie.
- I’m alone: “It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed” (Deuteronomy 31:8).
- God is tired of me and my sin: “For you, O Lord, are good and forgiving, abounding in steadfast love to all who call upon you” (Psalm 86:5).
- I deserve an easier life: “And he said to all, ‘If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me’” (Luke 9:23).
- God won’t be faithful to my loved ones so I need to worry. (There are two lies present here–God isn’t faithful and worry is helpful–that the following verses address):
“Your faithfulness endures to all generations: you have established the earth, and it stands fast” (Psalm 119:90).
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6–7).
4.) Confess the lie you believe to God, thank him for his truth, and ask him to help you believe and live it. Using the second lie as an example: “Lord, forgive me for doubting your love and the power of the gospel. I’m a great sinner, but you are a greater savior! Thank you that you are good and forgiving and abound in steadfast love. You love me! Help me now to actively believe and love this truth and use it to fight discouragement and experience the joy found only in you.”
