Seventh Statement of Christ from the Cross:
Jesus said,* “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!”*
1 We can have direct access to the Father
Luke 23:44-46a / ESV, “It was now about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour, 45 while the sun’s light failed. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. 46 Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice said…”
Romans 5:2 / ESV, “Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God.”
Ephesians 2:18 / ESV, “For through him (Christ) we both have access in one Spirit to the Father.”
Hebrews 10:19-20 / NLT, “And so, dear brothers and sisters, we can boldly enter heaven’s Most Holy Place because of the blood of Jesus. 20 By his death, Jesus opened a new and life-giving way through the curtain into the Most Holy Place.”
2 We can confidently commit our lives into God’s hands
Luke 23:46b “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!” And having said this he breathed his last.”
Psalm 31:3-5 / ESV, “For you are my rock and my fortress; and for your name’s sake you lead me and guide me; 4 you take me out of the net they have hidden for me, for you are my refuge. 5 Into your hand I commit my spirit; you have redeemed me, O Lord,
faithful God.”
3 We can respond with faith
Luke 23:47-49 “Now when the centurion saw what had taken place, he praised God, saying, “Certainly this man was innocent!” 48 And all the crowds that had assembled for this spectacle, when they saw what had taken place, returned home beating their breasts. 49 And all his acquaintances and the women who had followed him from Galilee stood at a distance watching these things.”
Matthew 27:54 / NLT, “The Roman officer and the other soldiers at the crucifixion were terrified by the earthquake and all that had happened. They said, “This man truly was the Son of God!”
