Weird

Week three - Weirdly Generous
1 Timothy 6:17-19
Bottom line: There is a way of living that is weirdly and wildly generous and insanely full.

“Money: The True Story of a Made-Up Thing” by Jacob Goldstein (host of the podcast Planet Money)
Currency only exists and has value insofar as we create and/or give it value

Why does a made-up thing seemingly dictate so much of our lives?

Our relationship with money is uncomfortable -
And, when it comes to money, for a lot of us, normal isn’t working - maybe it’s time to enter the realm of weird

Weird (def.) - mysteriously strange or fantastic, implying an unearthly or supernatural strangeness

In Christ, we are a new creation, no longer viewing from a worldly perspective (2 Corinthians 5:16-17) - in other words, as followers of Jesus, we ought to be weird.

We don’t want weird money (that’s too much like funny money), plus money is made-up and value neutral (it’s not bad or good in itself, it’s what we do with it)
As followers of Jesus, we want to be

.

17 Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. 18 Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. 19 In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life. —1 Timothy 6:17-19

  • Do Good - David Brooks on being human (new book, “How to Know a Person”)
  • Be Rich in good deeds - Thanksgiving baskets, angel tree gifts, Expanding the Table all year long (sign up to volunteer on the food truck here)
  • Be Generous and willing to share - Now. Here.

In other words, we want to be weirdly generous.

Building a building is weirdly generous.
We have enough for us, but that’s not the vision - we’re here to set the table for those who aren’t here yet

…Life that is truly life. —1 Timothy 6:19

There’s a way of living that most people miss - it’s weirdly generous and insanely full.
Instead of stockpiling and worrying about how much they have and how much they can gain, they live lives of wild generosity - giving it all away, knowing there is an endless supply of what we need most, which is the love of God and the presence of God with us. The places we can always find God - with each other (when two or three gather…), and with the least, the last, and the lost.
