I. Two Kinds of Tongues.
The Greek word for “tongues” is the word “glossolalia.”
A. Corporate Tongues.
1 CORINTHIANS 12:4-11; 27-301 CORINTHIANS 14:1-40
First understand that a corporate tongue must always be interpreted.
B. Private tongues.
ROMANS 8:26
JUDE 20
1 CORINTHIANS 14:2; 4; 5; 14; 17
II. Why Tongues?
JAMES 3:1-11
The writer suggests that there is one part of the human body that a man cannot tame or control: THE TONGUE.
Jesus said, “I will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.”
III. Three ways to receive the Baptism in the Holy Spirit.
- 1. Praise and Blessing God.
ACTS 2:4
The Word declares, “Sing and make melody in your heart to God with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs.” (Ephesians 5:19)
- 2. Laying on of hands.
ACTS 5:12; 8:17; 9:17-18; 19:6
HEBREWS 6:2
MARK 16:18
- 3. Hearing of faith.
IV. Final Observations.
- When God’s anointing comes upon you, you will not say anything that would bring reproach to Him.
- The individual does the speaking in tongues. The Holy Spirit doesn’t speak, He only gives “utterance” as one begins to speak by faith.
- No one can receive the Baptism in the Holy Spirit except by faith. Faith comes into play when the person begins to speak or say something that they don’t understand.
- All candidates must begin to audible and verbally praise God. God will not open your mouth, move your tongue or cause your lips to stammer. You must do these things by
faith. - When you hear yourself speaking in tongues, it builds up your faith to continue speaking in the Holy Ghost. Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.
- By faith, speak whatever groans, syllables, words or phrases God puts into your mind. This is not an “out of body” experience. One remains coherent when under the influence and anointing of the Holy Spirit.
