Scripture

1 Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us, 2 just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first were eyewitnesses and servants of the word. 3 With this in mind, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, I too decided to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, 4 so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught. —Luke 1:1-4 (NIV)

Study Guide

Step One: Icebreaker (Optional)
What is your favorite period in history? Put another way, what time period would be your preferred historical drama to watch?

Step Two: Open
Ask someone in your group to pray to open your time together. Ask another person to read Luke 1:1-4.

Step Three: Discuss

  1. Weekend Message: What was most challenging, encouraging, confusing, or stood out most to you?

  2. Careful Investigation: What does it look like to carefully investigate a historical figure today? In what ways have you investigated the person of Christ? How has your conclusion of his identity developed over the course of your life?

  3. Eyewitness Accounts: Luke states that his presentation is based on eyewitness accounts of Jesus. Why is this important? Are eyewitness accounts reliable?

  4. Truth versus Myth: In the weekend message, Kurt shared four reasons the Gospel cannot simply be a myth. Which of those reasons was the most convincing to you? Which reason might be most persuasive to people in our culture today?

  5. Having Certainty: Luke states in verse 4 that he recorded his gospel so that the reader may “know the certainty of the things you have been taught.” When it comes to the person of Jesus, what about him do you struggle to accept? What about him gives you the most confidence and peace?

  6. The Person of Jesus: How has the person of Jesus influenced history and culture? List as many examples as you can think of.

Step Four: Close in Prayer
Ask someone in your group to close in prayer, focusing on specific requests for people to find and follow Jesus.
