Reflections on Sunday’s Sermon
Below is a reference to the section of the New City Catechism that we went over on Sunday:
The New City Catechism
Lord’s Day 14
Did God Create Us Unable to Keep His Law?
No, but because of the disobedience of our first parents, Adam and Eve, all of creation is fallen; we are all born in sin and guilt, corrupt in our nature and unable to keep God’s law. (Romans 5:12)
Scripture
Hebrews 12:25-29- (English Standard Version)
- 25 See to it that you do not refuse him who speaks. If they did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, how much less will we, if we turn away from him who warns us from heaven? 26 At that time his voice shook the earth, but now he has promised, “Once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens.” 27 The words “once more” indicate the removing of what can be shaken—that is, created things—so that what cannot be shaken may remain.
28 Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, 29 for our “God is a consuming fire.”
Understanding and Applying
- Apostasy: Why is God adamant about warning His people to not refuse/reject Jesus (v. 25; Hebrews 1:1-2, 2:1-3, 6:4-6)?
-
• Severity: How is rejecting God’s final Word (Jesus) more serious than rejecting God’s word at Sinai (v. 25; Numbers 15:30-31; Hebrews 10:26-29)?
- Promissory: God’s word at Sinai exposed sin and the fallen state of the world but what does God’s Word from heaven do (vv. 26-27; Daniel 2:44; Colossians 1:19-20)?
-
• Certainty: Given the promises of God, what can we be sure of when history draws to a close (v. 27; 2 Peter 3:10-13; Revelation 11:15)?
- Responsibility: Having received a kingdom that cannot be shaken, how should we respond to God (v. 28; Joshua 24:13-15; Romans 12:1-2)?
• Consistency: Although the new covenant is different and better than the old covenant, how do we see that God, and His standards, remain the same (v. 29; Deuteronomy 4:23-24; Hebrews 10:28-29; 1 Peter 1:14-16)?
