“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” —Acts 1:8
What is a Holy Spirit?
What Happened When the Holy Spirit Arrived in Acts 2?
- The Spirit rested upon every believer and filled them up.
“When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit.” —Acts 2:1-4
They participated in the miraculous.
The apostles became bold and courageous witnesses of Jesus Christ.
The church was birthed.
“And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. And all who believed were together and had all things in common. And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people.” —Acts 2:42-47
Devoted – to be constant, to persist in, to be steadfast
They were devoted to the apostle’s teaching.
They were devoted to prayer.
They were devoted to one other.
They were devoted to sharing their faith.
“And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.” —Acts 2:47

Key word:
Abide – to remain, to stay, or to dwell
- Spiritual-filled believers bear spiritual fruit
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.” —Galatians 5:22-23
- Spirit-filled believers know that they are hopeless and helpless without the power of the Holy Spirit.
“For apart from me you can do nothing.” —John 15:5
“When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division, envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these. Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God.” —Galatians 5:19-21
“If you abide in me, and my words abide in your, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.” —John 15:7
